Great trout! But if you’re looking to keep them I’d suggest go for slightly smaller females. This is a big old male and he looks like he’s in the spawning stage based on the kype and dark colourations. Both male and females are not as tasty during this phase of their lives but if I’d have to choose I’d go female. A males meat most definitely has a far inferior taste and texture and colour as compared to a female. So much so it can actually turn people off the taste of fish (if this is your first time keeping one). I work at a small scale rainbow trout farm in Canada.

He never said he was keeping it.

Also if you’re going for catch and release you should handle a trout with wet hands and keep them close to the water and handle them as little as possible. Seems to me this guy is keeping this one. Again nothing wrong with that.

That is a very nice Brown trout, at least 5 #'s. If he doesn't keep it, it would die anyway. Where did you catch it. It looks like it may have been in TX. TX. stock many, many trout and they are stocked to catch and eat. Not my cup of tea but whatever.
