Rained Out at the Beach

Been at OIB, NC since Saturday night and it has been raining almost the entire time. Since surf fishing was pretty much out due to high wind and rough surf, I took my grandkids down to the canal boat dock. My granddaughter hooked a nice flounder but we couldn’t keep it due to the very brief season in NC (Aug. - Sept.). Today I got a nice sheepshead using a new synthetic bait called FishGum from Navarre Beach, FL. It’s a great new bait. You can get it online at FishGum.com. It’s not a great picture but it was a nice fish.

Last two times at OBX hurricanes and NO FISH. Locals were upset because they were allowing pro fisherman to come within 20 ft. of shore. That doesn't seem right to me, but I'm not a pro.
Caught enough crabs for dinner tho, on the fishing line!

Best way to tell the difference is the teeth. A sheepshead looks like they need to see a dentist.

Yep, got to agree. Black Drum. Note the fan tail and the dorsal fin (which is the best and fastest telltale), sheephead have one continuous fin. Drum two distinctive fins. And of course, as mentioned, sheephead have large front teeth for scraping the mussels from the dock, drums teeth are in the back. Drum have small whiskers on their bottom lip

I never realized that the dorsal fin was continuous on a sheepshead. I always look at the mouth to tell the difference and I couldn't see that very well in the picture. I did think it was a little strange for sheepshead to hit whatever he had on for a lure.
