I have rods and reels but mostly for deep sea and snapper fishing.
I've just put together a "beach/pier, balloon wheel cart.
What a recommended good or better quality and length surf rod?
Thanks!
My pick would be a 10 to 12 foot heavy power fast action graphite rod from either Lamiglas or St Croix with a 5000 series Penn spinfisher V reel. Spool it with 30# powerpro braid. The lure weight should be in the 3 to 10 ounce range. If. You want to catch panfish from the surf then downsize the rod to 9 or 10 feet with a 3000 or 4000 reel and one to six lure weight.

Welcome to the Forum, Ltc. I wouldn't know what brand name of rod to recommend because I make my own. I know that St. Croix makes a good blank, so, I would assume their rods are fine. As far as length, I wouldn't go over 10', depending, on your physical limitations. Ten feet will get you out there far enough anyway. Most people starting to surf fish think they have to be out there as far as the can go. That's not true, You will have to learn to read the surf and figure out where the troughs are. As far as reels go, the Penn Battle II is a good reel, maybe a 4000 or 5000 model. Good Luck!

Hi Mr. Love to catch,
I can't recommend any brands to buy. I was hoping someone here would have replied by now. I'm pretty sure your in Florida Atlantic side. Some will probably disagree with me, it's ok. There's a lot of guy's here that have way more knowledge and experience then me. I'm north of you, Atlantic Beach NC.
I would say nothing less then eight feet nothing more than ten feet med/heavy. I see some prefer twelve foot rods. I seen a guy buy a twelve foot setup. And he still couldn't get in his car, it was a two piece. The guys we fish with, only one has a twelve. I guess it has to do with how far you need to cast to get behind the breakers.
Zoey :)
I have 1 11' Diawa. I placed on it a Sshimano Saragosa 8000.
I took out a PennSlammer II 4500 on a TF 8'
I just bought a Van Staal 150 and delivered today from 1800Gear a TF 10' it was damaged.
Looks like next choice is a St Croix Triumph 10' Yet again,
Learning from others experience is what I'm looking for.
I don't have surf fishing experience and it's the opposite of reading the beach when I surfed.
Thanks for your advice!
Please post a picture your beach/pier, balloon wheel cart. I need a cart that will wheel easily over the sand. My friends tells me that the only item I am missing is the kitchen sink with all the gear that I carry - All the weight is exhausting to me by time I reach the water!!!
Thank you.
