Considering my first fishing yak. Perception Outlaw 11.5. Why should or shouldn’t I buy it?

I appreciate the feedback. I really like the idea of the “lawn chair” style sit on top with the open deck and stability for casting. I also have looked at the Bonafide rs117 - which is essentially the same thing for $200 more, that I can’t seem to justify.

Is there a good reason why or why not to buy this kayak?

I will be using it mostly on rivers and the intracoastal waterway - flats and marshy areas as well. Mostly I hunt reds and trout.

Thanks in advance!

Perception makes nice stuff. I was looking at them in person the other day. I’d say go for it unless someone has a better recommendation for a boat.

I loved the one with the oversized seat mounted on it too.

Yeah that’s the outlaw. On top of the on top. Bug open padded deck. I’m having a hard time justifying against it. Except that it’s “slow” but my wife paddle boards and any other kayak blows past her so that’s ok...

If you’re worried about the speed mount up a trolling motor for long trips. It seems big enough to handle a small one.

Yeah it does have that capability. I’m not really worried about it being slow.

Any idea how hard to rig a trolling motor is?

Pretty simple to hook up. I have done them on traditional boats. Not on a kayak.

See if you can paddle it for a while at a local pond or lake and see how you like it before dropping the hammer, if you cant, go with your gut. You can always sell it or trade it for something else.

Yeah I’ve got a local shop that does demos. By appointment only just trying to have my ducks in a row to not waste anyone’s time.

Pro: its very stable, has a large deck, tracks straight, lots of space to hold stuff.

Con: gets blown around a lot by wind, very slow, the rod holders are kind of usless, no in hull access, the seat is non adjustable and is uncomfortable, no built in dry storage, no good way to rig stuff like motors or electronics ( partly because no in hull access), no aftermarket support yet, not rudder ready, and the transducer hole is too small for most transducers.

I love my outlaw for the price ( i got mine new for under 600$) and they are great to fish out of but if i were to do it again i would have saved up and got a bonafide mostly because i plan to motorized my kayak. Perception said the outlaw is motor ready but that is not the case, there is a lot of drilling and cutting that needs to be done to make it ready.

If you haven’t done so already, check out the Bonafide ex123.

I've got the ascend 12T and really like the lawn chair style seat. Stability is fantastic. I have my buddy with me all the time(70# dog) and she does her own thing swimming around. It's never an issue pulling her back into the boat when she's ready for a break. The drawback is it's bulky and slow. But hey, I'm there for leisure and comfort.

I have the Bonafide SS127 and speed is only as fast as you can paddle. Do you really need speed? The purpose of a yak is to get where boats can't and stealth is to your advantage. The 127 will cost you more but with a hatch, cooler space and a dry well between your legs it was well worth the extra bucks.

I stand 99% of the time and as long as you have sea legs and not stiff leg it you will be fine.

I love my Twin Troller. I looked at yaks first but saw a link to the “greatest little bass fishing boat and checked it out. I bought it because to me it’s a better, more stable platform. I’d at least check it out online first, see what you think. Google Tein Troller.
