So I saw some folks fishing with Baitcasting rods but with spinning reels on top instead of bottom.
Is this a new way of fishing?

I mean, if you made a mistake buying a rod/reel, then yes.
Maybe they broke their other fishing pole?
I suppose fishing with a baitcasting rod using a spinning reel still beats not fishing at all.

Just flip it over. Still works.

Guide spacing and sizing is different. So it won't work as well. And the trigger would be in the way.

And rods are meant to bend a certain way. People using spinning rods upside down is a common sight and a pretty bad idea.

I've seen a number of people doing that throughout the years. Pretty much without exception it's either a rather poor looking family using beat up old gear or some young kid that has no idea what they're doing (the kind of people who will rig a bait fish type plastic sideways on a jig; cast it and let it sit there thinking it's just like using cut bait)
Edit: I don't mean this in a negative way at all, I really appreciate that at least they're getting outdoors and trying to fish. Just some people either can't afford a proper combo or simply don't know any better.

Yeah it'll work. Casting is terrible and they tend to break if used that way. And it's awkward. But I know people who have fished their whole life and still reel backwards with a spinning reel upside-down. They just learned that way and are too old to change now. It rankles the crap out of me, but it's their life.

there are tools for every task; the same applies to fishing... a spin reel can be placed on a casting pole, but there are better choices
