I'm new to fishing and I just use these pink fake salmon eggs. What's a good beginner lure to use when bass fishing and what's the best beginner lure for trout fishing? There are so many species of fish that it's confusing to know what bait to use. At the lake I usually fish at the fish consists of Yellow Perch, Largemouth Bass, and some Cat fish. Will all of these take the same bait?
Also what are the best knots to know? I tied the advanced clench knot today. Do different knots offer different things or is it just all the same?

Palomar! Most effective, easiest to tie.

Palomar knot and wacky rig senkos will do the trick for bass to start. Just fish it slooooow and let it sink more than you twitch it.

For the species you are after, the best starting lure I’d recommend is a plastic worm or creature bait in natural color (green pumpkin, or black and blue flake if it’s lower visibility). Some of my go-to plastics are Zoom Mag worms or Baby Brush Hogs in those colors. They are also among the easiest lures to learn how to fish. I use a 3/O wide gap worm hook and 1/8 ounce bullet weights as my primary setup. As for knots, you will be fine with a clinch or a Palomar.

What does 3/O wide gap mean? That's like the gauge of the hook hole?

I believe it’s the gauge of the wire used to make the hook, but I may be wrong on that. The wide gap just refers to the shape and bend of the hook. It is more suited for fishing plastics.

3/0 is the size. Wide Gap is the style of hook.
