Going to Ocean City, NJ. for the weekend and plan on fishing from a pier or shore. What are they catching and what is a good bait or lure? Not looking to keep anything food, just want to catch something!

I don't normally fish that area but right now there are some stripers around as well as some blues in the surf. You can also catch flounder and I know of some kingfish being caught also.

whether you are fishing from a pier or the shore make sure you are using a 6ft or better pole and spinning rig 3000 or 4000.
there are lots of bluefish on top of bunker pods, using a 2 1/2 oz or better casting lure like a crippled herring or a castmaster with a bucktail.
You may be able to catch seabass or fluke as well by jigging off the dock. Seabass will hit anything shiny that moves.Fluke are best caught with a weighted jig and hook(SPRO) and a trailing top (5.0) hook about 1 foot above the weighted jig, attach 6 " gulp bait to both hooks and bounce the jig off the bottom,All fish hit both jigs and casting lures ON THE FALL. That is when the bait drops back the fish will hit it.
pay attention to limits and size .Jersey has some outrageous fines.you will need a saltwater license for the shore .the dock probably not ,you can get one here,

Kingfish are what the websites are saying. Fluke aka flounder should be in the surf.

Stripers, Blues, Fluke, Sea Bass are in. A south wind will put the fluke off their feed.
