Good Mornin' Wes nash, welcome to the Forum. I have never used or heard of anyone using squid for a freshwater bait, but I don't fish for cats either.

I have used leftover and frozen squid, shrimp and leftover and frozen mud minnows. I hate to waste good bait.
Catfish, except for flatheads, or yellow cats, feed mostly by smell and seafood bait really stinks after it has been sitting around on a boat or pier for a while. Yes, squid is a great catfish, and perch, bait. If you present it, they will come. If they are home!!!

I use squid for strugeon on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Have done quite well with it.

I've been fishing brackish water lately and catch lots of hardhead catfish. If I'm fishing with 2 poles 1 is always has squid the other may have chicken liver or shrimp or 1/2 of a finger mullet and if 🐱 s are the only thing biting and they are favoring 1 over the others the second pole gets the bait changed.

IT IS A GOOD CATFISH BAIT. CAUGHT MANY. HARD FOR THEM TO ROB YOU. MOSTLY USED ON JUG LINE FISHING.

Yes, sir. Squid is a most excellent jug and trot line catfish bait.
