How do I kayak fish?

So me and my gf are gonna do some kayak fishing in kootney lake BC this summer, and im quite nervous. I have never fished out of a kayak and im a little afraid of falling out if i get a larger sized fish. The kayaks are just regular closed tops. If anyone could give me some pointers on how to not fall out that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Take the kayak out before you embark so you can test your limits on it. Test the stability and make sure you have a place to set your paddle when you hook a fish

Watch some videos. Get pumped for it.

The trick is to stay upright, dont lean left to right, and keep in mind you can tire the fish out, spin your kayak any direction and the net is your friend.

And secure all your stuff incase you do roll. Waterproof bags, zip lock etc. You're gonna get wet, but you don't have to tip or roll.

Only pa c k the bare minimum, set your drag a little lighter than usual and remember it's not the end of the world if one gets away.

closed tops are much harder to fall out of than a sit-on-top. You'll be fine. Wear a PFD at all times and have a freaking blast!

One tip, while your'e getting used to it when you're casting lay your paddle across your lap so it can easily be accessed. If you feel yourself tipping push the flat side of the paddle down on the top of the water your tipping to. The paddle can be used as a brace to steady yourself. Go out and practice this move with no gear in the boat, lay the flat side of the paddle on top of the water and push down,If you push to hard pull back up, you'll feel the control you can gain by this simple maneuver. This can be done with one or both hands. Practice is your friend. the video is for white water but it works in flat water too

bf111, got a suggestion for you to go to a vendor that sells the type of kayak you will be using in BC this summer and see if they have a demo model. Put it in the water and don't take any gear with you just get in it and go through the motions of fishing. Let the net be your friend when you go fishing you just need to tell him what to do.

Don't know what you mean by regular closed top. There are sit in and sit on top versions. Post a pic and maybe we can help you better.

Whatever you do, do NOT lean way forward and off to a side somewhat. If you do so, you are going to capsize the Yak. Did that a coupe of times and lost a lot of expensive fishing gear.

The sit in kayak that I've been using, with the low center of gravity hasn't been a problem for me so far. It's kind of fun having the fish pull you around, helps tire them out. Of course I tend to have my drag set too tight, so when I hook the really big ones, they snap the 6 lb leader before I have a chance to react anyway.

Make sure you do some research to show what you need to go fishing with a kayak. Online, you’ll find several sites. There’s a couple of kayaking shows too. Check with your local kayak dealer or tackle shop’s too. They’ll show You the right rig and tackle.

Personally I like soft tackle boxes and a coolers. You can buy cooler’s with rocket launchers for your fishing poles. They’re light weight and very sufficient. With your soft-box (tackle box), just bring what you need.

Keep it light. It’s easier to maneuver your boat and get your boat to the water. Might want to look into kayak wheels for your boat. They come in handy. There’re use to transport your kayak from your vehicle to the water.

Go bend a rod and catchem.

Enjoy,

DBB

Fish from a designated fishing kayak. Super stable. Some even designed so you can stand. I have an inflatable. Never worried about capsizing but can’t stand on it.

Just got back from the beach. The tarpons are rolling. Going out next week to bend a rod.

Some of those puppies could be north of a 100 lbs.

Just got a flag. Good thing to have. Bigger boats out there where I’m going.
