Welcome to the Forum, J_DeV. Not to make leader out of but for tippet it would more than likely be depending on the water clarity.

Please put your city, and state down on the location section of your profile page, thank you.

Depending on the brand of Flouro, that would be about 4X tippet. For streamers or large nymphs that should be fine. By large nymphs I mean sizes 4, 6 or 8. Something like stonefly nymph. With smaller nymphs you would have to drop down to 5X or finer.

Depends on the size of the fly. You may not even be able to get that line through the eye of a size 12 or smaller. Bigger stuff will be fine.

If you are fishing big flies I would not worry about it, as any fish that takes a size 4 or larger fly, isn’t going to worry about the heavy line (at least in CO).

Leaders of course start out fairly heavy at the butt and tapper down to the tippet where you attach whatever fly your using. That ripper is sized as has been pointed out to fit the fly you choose. I will have the end of the leader as it comes from the rack an attachment point for the final tippet which will be closer to 2 or 4 lb test. You can catch very large fish on that strength by playing the fish. But the bigger tippet you use, the more likely a fish might refuse your offering. 6# tippet isn’t too big but it’s a guessing game. If you can catch fish on it, use it. I can land 10#-16# steelhead on 10# leader. Probably bigger fish but they haven’t ever come my way. That was with level line reels and spinning reels not a fly rod. But it’s done often by the guys out west.

What size trout do you find where you fish ? Been catching or seeing larger than 6lb (usually in excess of 24")? If not, you're probably better to drop back to 4lb Flouro (NOT the coated stuff, the 100% flourocarbon, I use P-Line, they have a couple of choices), easier to tie on a #12++ hook eye, and easily land a 5lb+ fish. Personally, I use a fairly heavy tapered leader and use the flouro as my tippet (anybody else curious as to why an itty-bitty spool of tippet is so expensive ? I mean, damn, it's only a few yards....must be the "convenient stackable packaging", huh ?) joined with a double uni knot... have lost fish !..... just not because of the rig or knot I described. I use a heavy tapered leader simply because I like the way it turns a fly a bit more pronounced, at the end layout cast (I rarely use more than 36" of flouro, usually less),....maybe it's just the way I cast, but for me, it works. I like to think it imitates the way a bug goes from flying to drowning.....in a heartbeat.
