Could someone please explain to me how High Tide and Low Tide has an affect on catching Trout Last Sunday was low tide and everybody was catching fish. I went yesterday, high tide and the fish just weren't biting. Both Sundays were nice weather wise. I totally don't understand. Thanks. HawksFan03

As the tide goes out it carries a lot of fish food with it - crustaceans and such, and the fish know it through thousands and thousands of years of ssdw.

Incoming Tide brings the food back in.... The Current helps fish go upstream. They may go into feeding frenzy. Also when tide is high there will be less fish per gallon of water. When the tide is low there is more fish per gallon. Fish know they have time to stay in deep water at the tide changes. Most guides will tell you they see more fish caught for an hour or two before and after the top and bottom of tides as compared to middle of flood or ebb tides.

The trout that I catch in MN. could care less about what the tide is doing.

Yeah I just noticed he's in Washington. What kind of trout you talking about Hawksfan? I figured you was from Florida and didn't know what the hell you were talking about. Trout. Hawksfan. Does that mean you're from Georgia? Cause that would also qualify you for not knowing a trout if it bit you in the ..................

I was thinking same thing Fly and Spirit...
But who knows. Is he talking about Perch or something in surf maybe?

Maybe steelies? If you're talking about rainbows and such in fresh water, it was purely a coincidence. The moon and sun do affect feeding habits, look at the solunar tables, but if there's a correlation with the tides I've never heard of it.

Spiritof27: You are very funny to say the least. I am a Florida Cracker and a Georgia Peach. I was born in Daytona Beach, Fl. The Navy took me to Oak Harbor, WA and I am living in Wenatchee, WA. I LUV living in the Great Northwest and being able to have 4 seasons. I stay away from Daytona Beach. There is way too much family drama there for me.

I caught 3 Rainbow Trout a week ago and people were catching fish left and right. It was low tide then. Yesterday, NOBODY was catching anything. I guess it's best to find out what the tide is going to be like before going lake fishing. Is that correct? I LUV God, Seattle Seahawks, NASCAR races, and fishing. Maybe not always in that order but that's what jazzes me the MOST. Thanks for your help and the others too. HawksFan03

Well as someone mentioned on here, why you asking me, I haven't caught a fish since last December. And not for lack of trying. At least when you moved to Washington you learned the difference between a trout and a drum. Now I've never heard of the tide affecting the trout bite, but what the hell do I know? Tell you what, I will check on the tide next time I go and I'll test your theory. You do the same, we'll compare notes. That'll be a great sample for statistical analysis, n = 2. I see Wenatchee is on the Columbia. Is that where you caught them? I guess since there's no dams between Wenatchee and the ocean, the river is affected by tides? So, tell me, should I check the tide in Wenatchee, or Portland, or Eureka or San Francisco or San Diego or where? Nothing I fish in is connected to the ocean. It's kinda like the cocktail hour. As well as it being 5:00 somewhere, it's also low tide.

Hawksfan I just reread that and I don't want you to think that I'm tryin to be a smartass. I would really like to see if you are correct in your assumption, or if it was just a coincidence. The Devil is in the details though. As in, when is it low tide where I live in the middle of California? BTW, I'm a Hoosier born and raised and the Navy brought me to California 44 years ago. Happy to call you shipmate!

Florida...Speckled and silver trout at the beginning of the falling tide on the bay side along the shore near the passes. Hey Spirit, native Hoosier here too. Looks like we both think it's a good place to be from.

Take a break when the tide is low and again when it is high, or use that time to move to make better use of the current. When the tide is coming in I liked to fish the back waters when it is going out I like the mouths of creeks, letting my baits drift out with the current.

About tides, my first hunting day I was told to go late afternoon and wait til dark as they move about then, I didn't see anything. 3 days later I checked the gulf coast tides and tide change was 11.30. Went at 10 that morning and saw 4 deer, shot my first one at 11.40 that day.

Oh you betcha. I'm from around South Bend. You? I left there in 1968. Haven't been back since the turn of the century. I have a sister lives there and my 99 year old mom who feels the same about flying as I do. We don't.
