I’m trying for Stripers - anyone fished these areas? Share a spot? 🤷🏻♂️ Any Striper tips at all?
I’m using 1oz bucktail jig and trying cutbait today.
I wouldn't eat anything that comes from those rivers. Unless they have been totally cleaned up. I wouldn't even want my line to touch those waters.
Asente: Welcome to the Stage. Thanks for posting all the necessary data. You live in a fascinating area with a lot of great water to fish in. I assume you are going to fish from the bank, fishing from the shore? I'm sorry but I personally have no idea about hot spots. One thought though, if you can afford it, hire a guide for a 1/2 day fishing trip. Regardless of where he takes you, he will know a lot of answers to your questions about the best places to fish for strippers from the shore. Just Sayin...RJS

Waxdipper - So you will not eat fish that come from the Atlantic Ocean? When will they clean it up? Big job. Besides that, I’m a catch and release guy.

I know that area and there’s no doubt stripers move through there, in fact a large percentage of the fish that spawn in the Hudson pass through there.
The waters aren’t as bad as they were back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, having been cleaned up extensively. And since so many of the striped bass population has to move through there to get upstream to spawn, there’s really no reason not to fish the area. It’s got plenty of current and even more structure. I would avoid fishing near the bottom though as there’s hundreds of years worth of snags waiting for ya.

That’s clean ocean water. It rips when the tide is moving.

Darn tootin. There are those who know nothing about the waters around NYC, believing it’s just gotta be the most polluted waters in the 🇺🇸. Some of us know the river better. Sure it’s brown and muddy when you fly over it, but I’ve been on the river, next to Manhattan when the tide was high, and the visibility rivaled the cleanest, clearest waters anywhere I’ve been.
That is not what I said. I said I won't eat anything from the east river or Harlem river. I grew up in New York and would never fish either of those places because of the pollution there.

Pray tell, how long ago did you leave ?
I admit those were some truly disgusting waters back in the days before environmental consciousness, but we’re talking about fish that are simply passing through. Not like the blue claw crabs, or fluke laying in the mud.

Asente, I just read the report in the New England Fisherman. Large Stripers are HERE, NJ,CT,and RI Striper fisherman are catching on the shoreline, and in the rivers.
I left there a long time ago. I think I left in 1964.
