Shimano only cuz I also mountain bike and have great faith in their products. Also the Japanese are really great at machining.

I have two bait casters by Quantum. IMHO Rapala makes the greatest number of what I would term almost supernatural lures going. I love Shimano for spinning reels.

Shimano for reels. St. Croix for rods. Rapala, Salmo, Relax (i.e. Kopyto shad), Dragon (especially the Bandit shad), Mepps for spinners.
