Most fishing videos I see show the anglers holding the rod with the metal loops and the reel facing downward. Why do they do it like that?
My papa taught me how to fish and we would always have the loops and reel facing up.
Which is the right way?

Depends what kind of rod and reel you have.

Spinning, spincast, or baitcast?

Ummmm... I don’t fish on a regular basis. Usually every few years or so. It’s not a spinning reel but a closed one with an opening at the top.

Depends on which type of reel you are using. Do you know if you are using a bait caster or a spinning reel?

Fully enclosed with just an opening at the top for the line to come out?

An opening on top for line to come out

Ok so you are using a spincaster. You were taught the right way to fish that type of pole. You are seeing videos of people fish spinning reels which is done “upside down” if you will.

Couldn’t they fish right side up with those polls?
Also why to people cast then slowly reel in. I was taught you just cast and wait until you see the bobber go down or feel a tug. Doesn’t reeling after you cast defeat the purpose of fishing because it’s a waiting game and it’s not waiting if you constantly move the hook.

No you fish those poles that way. Regarding your 2nd question there are just many different types of way to fish depending on what you are fishing for. There is no wrong way.

Oh ok. Thank you. 😁

If its a closed face reel its probably a bait cast reel. The eyes should be up ,the reel should be up .If it doesn't cast good you may have to much line on the reel or if you cast and the line jerks or stop and your bait goes flying you may not have enough line on the reel.
