Looking for help on what fish finder to get

I’m 18 and have a 14 foot aluminum boat with motor and a transom mount trolling motor. I am wondering what I should get for a fish finder I’m not looking to break the bank but also not looking to cheap out. I was thinking either a lowrance hook2 5 triple shot or a humminbird helix 5 with DI and GPS. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas about what to get that would be greatly appreciated.

I liked my Helix 5 GPS G2 so much I bought a Helix 7 DI GPS G2 as well. Personally my favourite feature is the Autochart. Making accurate maps has been the biggest game changer for me.

Thanks I’ll have to take a look at that feature. Does sonar not pick up once you reach a certain speed?

I’ve heard of people that have different units that once they start moving the fish finder won’t keep up with the boat have you experienced this problem.

Depends on how fast I’m going and how deep it is but it pretty much always shows the depth properly. If I’m going 20mph or so it doesn’t give a detailed depiction of the bottom and I have some interference because of my cable routing. No issues while I’m trolling or mapping though.

Honestly most of them just simply can’t scan and scroll fast enough to give you very accurate displays at driving speeds. They really aren’t designed to pick out detailed structure at 15 20 or 50mph.

I can't help you but I know both of those units are popular with kayak fisherman, so you might look at kayak sites to find reviews.

I currently use a Helix 7 Mega Side Imaging G3 that I got on Amazon for about 700.

Nice thing is that it also came with Navionics maps which already cost 100 alone, but the Mega Side Imaging model also has Mega Down Imaging as well.

Honestly it's worth the upgrade as side imaging is tons way more useful than just down imaging. If you can't get it now I would save for it.

I've got the Helix 10 on the console of my boat, it'll read depth at 60mph no problem in places the lake I normally fish has depths of 130ft. It doesn't give as good of a return at high speeds but depths are not a problem.

As long as the transducer is set at the right angle and has clear open water with no turbulence should read at any speed, won't be perfect but should see depth. I had one on a boat several years back and ran top speed over shallow areas, still showed ok.
