I'm new to this site and new to catfish dip baits. I've been using chicken livers for years. I went out to the lakes this afternoon and met a guy that had a whole bunch of channel cats on a stringer and he told me he's used dip bait. I'm curious about the procedure of using this stuff.

Soak a sponge in dip, put it on the hook, let her rip. Pretty simple. You can buy commercial, or you can make your own. There are also pre-rigged sponges and tubes available to soak in your concoction. If you want to catch a big channel cat, they're just like other big cats, they're predators. Live bait - minnows, bluegills, suckers, frogs, salamanders, big ol Mormon crickets. Make sure that's legal where ever it is you're fishing. Be nice if you'd let us know. Your email address doesn't tell us anything about your location. Put your city and state in there and a lot more folks will respond. Welcome to the stage jj. We do love photos.

I live in Grovetown, GA., about 15 miles west of Augusta, GA. I've usually used chicken livers on a True-turn hook with sewing thread wrapped around the livers, but a fellow fisherman showed me a stringer of eatin' sized catfish (1 1/2-3 lb) he's caught using dip bait.

Jarijenkins: Welcome to the Forum. I don't think you will find channel cats difficult to catch. I was not familiar with "dip" bait either. Well worth a try. After my father and I found a ready source for perch, that's what we usually used for catfish of all types in Red River. Cats are not finiky eaters, but if offered a lot of choices will show what they prefer in your locale. And that's why we, the Forum needs your profile to show where you live. Just Sayin...RJS

I have had good luck in adding what is left in a can of oysters after you eat them. Smoked Oyster juice has been the sauce we added after not getting a bite for trout one year after we were Deer Hunting for days with no luck we went fishing. Regular (non-smoked) is what I have usually done well with for all species of fish. Sand Shrimp Oil is another thing I would recommend for Most species. Cats will bite on worms with Sand shrimp or Oyster can juice for sure.

I’m not getting paid for this!
My son in law, Grant Mars, in Longview Texas makes and sells his own brand of catfish dip all over East Texas and it keeps him really busy throughout the Spring through the Fall.
I don’t know if it’s legal to put his contact information on Luke’s website so for now I’ll just leave the above as FYI.
God Bless and good luck to all.

I would bet most of us cat fishermen have tried chicken liver for cats. I shur did. But I've never found the need to try dip baits yet. Like Jeremy says; those oils work like a charm. There are a bunch of them sold right at Wal-Mart. A small piece of carp, sucker, or a minnow or fresh peeled shrimp and a squirt of shrimp or crawdad oil should get you catching a bigger size channel cat.

One time, many years ago, I read that the average time of a chicken liver and hook tossed into the Colorado River near Moab was 3 seconds. And I had wanted to canoe from Green River, Utah to just before Moab, at Dead Horse Point. So I decided to try it, a three day float down a slow moving part of the Green. And except for breakfast and some chicken liver, all I took was potatoes for French fries and some cooking oil to deep fry catfish. Well I learned that first night that the chicken liver worked great. But all I was catching were 8" cats. There were millions of them. So after an hour of fishing and tossing them babies back I felleted a small cat and tried a piece of it. And the size jumped to 2 and 3 pounds.

Small catfish filet for bait then nailed fatties???? The best food for fish is fish. I was told that many years ago and it has always held true. Look at many artificial baits....they resemble fish.

An excellent channel cat bait is catfish skin. Catch 1 cat & fillet it then cut a piece of skin a couple inches long & put it on a hook. You'll need to make a very small cut in the skin for the hook. Catfish skin is tough. I like using the skin & belly fat from the bottom of the fish. Whole small catfish are good blue cat & flathead bait. Better check your fishing rules before trying that, during the day.

Isn't that the same thing as stink bait?

To be honest with all my Fishingstage Good Buddies.... I don’t care how you spell it... it’s a portion of freshly removed fish meat or other meats and it means good food. Salmon are worth Doing many smaller fish I just as soon cleaning guts out and cooking whole in foil with some butter and onions... maybe some paprika or favorite spice for fish. Eat it off the bone at Fish Camp Fresh as it gets with a campfire or BBQ. Rice or something tasty on the side.
