Aftercare following joint replacement surgery Carl is here approximately 6 weeks out from total right knee arthroplasty. Clinically his knee is doing very well; there is no sign of infection and he is able to range his knee to my satisfaction. However, he does show some diffuse swelling and tenderness to his right upper extremity following PICC removal 3 days ago. I reviewed the literature and ordered a venous Doppler of his right upper extremity due to his described symptoms and relatively high rate of deep vein thrombosis secondary related to PICC use. Depending on ultrasound results I may plan for inpatient vs outpatient care. We also discussed symptoms of PE such as chest pain and shortness of breath and I explained that he should immediately resent to the ED if he experiences any of the above symptoms. All of his questions were answered and he agrees with this plan. Follow up with right upper extremity venous Doppler results. We got those results today and he does have a superficial venous thrombosis per the tech. I notified the patient by phone and have started him on Eliquis, and prescription was sent to his pharmacy. Instructions were given by phone.=================================Venous Doppler results showed a superficial venous thrombophlebitis in his right upper extremity. I discussed this with the patient and relevant internist who recommended outpatient care with oral blood thinners. Once again, I reminded the patient that he should immediately present to the ED with chest pain or shortness of breath.

My plans for the summer were fast and fun.

Now it will be as the LORD sees fit as it always is anyway.

He does have a sense of humor.

Look at the bright side, they found it before it went to your ticker or lungs. I have had both knees done 3 times in the last 5 years so I can relate to your concerns maybe somewhat.

Its a good sign when you have a good range of motion and your pt person is happy.

hope all goes well for you and you have a speedy recovery.

Prayers Oz, hope everything turns out well. I'm looking at knee surgery in August. Somehow it doesn't hurt as bad when I hear about complications.......

Range of motion satisfactory, good. Thrombosis, not so good. But. They have pills for that. And procedures. And you're gonna be ok. They can fix that. Keep an eye, be aware, do what you''re told and get better. We're all pulling for you OZ.

Wow Oz, I am not one to be up on the medical language so google I did. Glad they found it now and can get some good thinners in you. No chance you are coming off our prayer list any time soon.

Since you are of the many I want to meet this time next year I will put you on the morning prayer list as well. Get better my friend.

Follow orders Oz. I'm going thru 3-6 200mg Advil ah day since they postponed my new knee 3 days before the surgery in March just to keep the tears out of my eyes. We'll compare notes 'bout Christmas time on our recovery's. Stay safe and well in this new world we live in, Jer
