Welcome. I'm not the one to ask since I mostly fish salt.

A general rule of thumb I have used for early gills and crappie is a water temperature above 46 degrees F. Of course, that may differ from lake to lake. Anytime the water temp reaches 50 degrees I am geared and ready to go. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum DL. When I was still in Michigan and ice first went out I fished the the same spots for bluegill as I did through the ice using small jigs and wax worms or wiggled. For crappie fish the shallow water where the ice went out first on the lake or channels that get a lot of sunny light during the day. I used minnows or wigglers. You may want to call the governor to make sure she's allowing fishing the day you want to go. The rules seem to change from day to day. You should be ok in the u.p. she probably hasn't figured out where that's at yet

Where are you in the UP? My wife's got a lot of family up that way around Ensign and Escanaba. Know any Papineaus? Bunch of crazy Canucks.

I fish a lake near Grayling Mi. in the lower peninsula, its usualy the 2nd week of June b4 the gills hit the beds.
depends a lot on the weather and the water getting warmed up and the fish warmed up. Shallow, black bottom lakes will warm quicker.
