Does anyone know the reason my soft plastics seem to "melt" styrofoam?

I used to think it was partially because I stored my tackle box in the garage, but this happened to gear stored indoors.

I’m gonna guess the oils soft plastics are stored in might break down the styrofoam. I have no science to back that up other than gasoline+styrofoam=danger.

Pertolium products melt foam and some plastics. Its why some baits react when touching other baits or eat through non "worm proof" tackle boxes...

It depends on the plasticizers ("oils" mentioned above) used in the soft plastics. Most modern baits will have a warning in small print somewhere on the package about this. Not all soft plastics will do this. If you can find some urethanes they should be inert. Anything really floppy will probably dissolve your styrofoam and sometimes even your plastic tackle box if it's low grade polyethylene. (Material scientist/fisherman here).
