I need help learning how to maintain a hand auger. Any tips appreciated.
I haven't been ice fishing since I was a kid, and I'm just getting back into it now. My trip this morning ended up in failure due to my auger. My gut feeling is that I'm not sharpening the blades properly, but it won't bite into the ice like my father-in-law's auger does. They're both hand augers, ages old, with Mora steel. How do I get that damn thing to bite into the ice properly?

Mora replacement blades are available assuming the design hasn’t changed too much the new blades may fit your old auger. Otherwise I just learned to resharpen the blades myself from watching YouTube videos.

YouTube videos on how to sharpen them. If yours not up for that, you can usually find a professional sharpener locally. Most of them advertise for knives and scissors, but they'll likely be able to sharpen up auger blades too.

Ice auger blades are very hard to sharpen well. It’s probably worth it to get a new set of blades. Especially if you are using a hand auger.
