Hey fishing friends! I'm planning on using my baitcaster for the first time tomorrow morning! I know I will backlash... a lot. I think I have it set up correctly to where the lure hits the floor and stops but I need some tips! Any helpful tips with how to use a baitcaster would be great! 🙂 Thanks

All I can say is dont try to strong arm it and use your thumb as a guide and stopper because the string going to naturally want to spool up just take it easy till you got the feel for it.

Just start with short easy casts. hold the rod at a 45° angle and move the tension knob till the bait/lure falls slowly, then turn it a couple more clicks. Just do a smooth cast. Nothing to exaggerate or rapid if that makes sense. Basically don’t whip it

I understand what your saying. When you say a few clicks are you referring to the breaks or the tension?

Tension. Some reels have them that click and others don’t.

On the same side as the handle

When you first start, turn your magnets up fairly high and adjust the drag so you have to bob the rod up and down gently for it to take line out of the reel... my .02
Loosen things up as you develop muscle memory for thumb braking.

I also feel like turning it over so that the handle is facing up mid cast helps with backlashes too. Sadly, you never get past them. I still have multiple a day and I’ve been using for 8 years

Thumb the spool the second the bait hits the water.
Start with the brakes on high and adjust them lower and lower to match every different weight presentation you cast.
