Can anyone remember back when going fishing was having a basic a simple no frills reel, a plastic bobber that never stayed put, a cheep hook. and even cheeper line. You walked to any stream or pond with some backyard worms or stale bread, and catch a blue gill Ah the thrill of the fight.

Now it's intense courses lasting over an hour, on how to:
Set up and use a not so cheep bait caster,
Seminars on fishing tactics that are semi commercials,
Matching lines, rods and reels and loops fish,
A several hour course on how to set up how to push the right buttons and interpret your almost 2K fishing finder does it come with a PHD at end.
Special glasses to see the fish,
Magnifiers to be able to thread on your bobber stopper,
Hire or marry a porter to carry a 400lb tackle box loaded with gear you might use once,

And don't forget: fishing fashions, it's more important to look good than feel good.
Then the whole list of regulations, license, tags, countless no trespass signs and the yada yaddas go on and on.

Your simple 5 min trip on a spur of the moment to fish has turned into a major undertaking.

OH my writing this already made me tired....... Nap time

BUT GOTTA LOVE IT EHHHH?

Know what you mean. I can remember when I was around 8, fished the creek behind our home. Used string, tied a hook on, a stone for a sinker and a twig for a float. There was a drain where I could dig for worms. Threw the line into the water and the float (twig) went straight under. So pulled it out and a fish was on the line. Those are memories

Those were the days right? And it seems like we always caught fish somehow.

I remember those days (I think I do). But I’d be afraid to marry someone who could carry a 400 pound tackle box. lol 😂. Welcome big g. Could you please put your location in your profile. Pretty please and thanks.

I still enjoy the challenge of doing things the simple way. I know a ton of guys that have to have the latest gear, electronics and gimmicks, and they don't catch any more fish than I do. It may sound weird, but I actually work pretty hard at fishing. My wife says that I enjoy the prep work that I do just as much as the actual fishing, and she is pretty much right on. Too many people just want the easy way to do everything, but I think you get much more satisfaction by earning success. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, and am certainly old, but I get just as much enjoyment out of fishing with a bobber and worm as anything else.

I remember as a kid, about 11 or 12 yrs old going to a pond with a loaf of bread and catching a stringer full of big fat bluegill. It was very simple and easy. Now I fish pretty much just salt water, and I do spend a lot of time tying my own rigs at home before going out. I enjoy it though, all of it. I don't wait till I need a rig to tie it. Lol

Think I told you guys how I started. I used cotton string out of a feed sack and 1 of mamas small safety pins for a hook and a 3’ tree limb. I caught crickets and grass hoppers at the fishing site. Simple. For some reason mama encouredged me to go every day. Guess she saw my potential.

Mike I was about 5 years old. Didn’t have a care in the world. When I wasn’t at grandads pond I was in the woods with his 22 rifle. The family went to town one day and stopped somewhere and this business was selling chances on a zebco 202 and rod as well as a Shetland pony. I wanted that rod and reel so bad.had the drawing later that day. Grandma had a phone and she got a call,I won the Shetland pony. You talk about heart broken. Well the next day grandpa picked up the hairy devil. Bite and kick you yes. Was about 3 weeks later the horse died. I could care less as well as grandpa. Point is,get a kid to do today what we did. We need parents!!!

Twister I love your story! People were different back then that's for sure. I was in the woods myself all I could be as a kid. I can relate to the mean Shetland pony, my sister had one, and it was onery! Most kids these days want to stay inside and play video games. God help us!

The good olde days, cane poles and cricket cage. Down to the lake to the blue gill bed and catch them until you were out of bait. Come home with a slew of big fat blue gills. Clean fish. Then there was hunting season.
Kept us out of trouble back then. Always something to do. Oh, to go back!
