This one has me stumped. Caught it in the surf off South Carolina coast in March.
Very soft texture to body. Had black dorsal fin and long black pelvic or anal fin.
I was fishing for whiting with shrimp.
My name is Sandy. I fish off South Carolina and Cape Cod mostly.

Looks like a Ling, but I don’t think they are found that far south. Also called Tomcod up around New England, I think.
And welcome aboard!
Does kinda look like a ling, but that would really be unusual to catch one down there, they're mostly in the north Atlantic over by Europe. Tomcod have three distinct fins on their back, ling have one long one from head to tail fin. I'd say it's for sure some kind of cod. Not what we call lingcod out here on the west coast. They are not cod at all, they're graylings and one of the best tasting fishes I've ever eaten. Be careful, they bite.
What is the white string like things
Barbel? Should only be one if it's a ling.
Looks nothing like any ling I've ever caught on the west coast! I think you caught a "dorkfish"!
Sorry Spirit! Missed your reply before I responded.

Makes sense. The NE fish called ling is a red hake and they are very similar.

Any Lings I have seen have a huge head compared to body?
Hey, thanks for all the input. I do not remember any teeth, though.
