Spooling flourocarbon

Whats the best way to do this to best avoid line twists and birds nests? I like to use flouro for trout but mono for everything else but i didn’t expect the flouro to be prone to more issues than mono! I see alot of people talking about line conditioner so opinions on that are appreciated but id like to not have to buy anything else unless it helps alot.

-Thanks!

Most imporant thing is to make sure you are spooling the right direction. Fluoro has a strong "memory" to it so even after coming off the spool you will notice it maintains a curve based on how it was wrapped on the stock spool. It needs to go on the spool of your reel in a mirrored fashion. Since the line comes off your reel over the top of the spool, it needs to come off the stock spool the same way.

Think of how an old reel-to-reel projector looks. You also need to make sure you keep consistent pressure on the line so it goes on tight. If it goes on loose it will be more likely to backlash.

The easiest way to do it, and how i spent my weekends as a kid, is to have a friend, spouse, kid, or special jig hold the stock spool on a pencil or screwdriver while wearing some leather work gloves. Have them use the gloves like brakes to press on the side of the spool to provide resistance so the line stays tight while you work the reel and fill it with line.

I watched some videos on YouTube but never tried it. If you put the fluorocarbon on your reel and take the spool off and soak it in warm water the line doesn’t get tangled up as bad. I’ve never tried it personally but can’t see why it wouldn’t work.

That sounds alright but my only question would be about the grease and lube on the inside, would that be affected?

KVD Line and Lure spray really works. I don't know how, but it does. I fish a lot and run like 10ish reels with fluoro, the $20 bottle lasts me like two years.

You also need to be realistic about what thickness line you can manage on a given sized spinning reel. Even the best fluoros work a lot better on a larger spool.

On all my Floro lines, the night before fishing, I hook the lure on one fence in the back yard and walk to the other fence 50 feet away with the rod, letting the line out. Prop the rod against the fence, so the line is off the ground. Next morning I wind in the line, put the rod in the boat and go fishing. The line will come off the spool without the curls, and cast longer, and you feel the bite better.
