Help with an antique reel?

I’ve got an antique reel inherited after my great grandfather passed away, and I’m putting it back into service. It was cleaned and oiled before it was put away 20+ years ago and it functions flawlessly. I had to replace the crank handle due to the old one being dry rotted and seized.

The drag is my issue here, I can tighten it down, but the back off is so small that it goes from “winch a whale up the Empire State Building” to “spooled by a caterpillar” in almost no movement of the drag wheel-lever-thing (not sure of the nomenclature, I’m just getting back into fishing).

Any help here is appreciated.

Call them up and let them know your reels’s make and model and they should be able to sell you the right set of drag disks.

That’s the thing though, I don’t have a model on it, the only badging on it is on the side pictured.

I know it’s an ocean city, bay city, but no model numbers.

I’ll definitely get with smooth drag, they’re likely to be able to tell me something.

Thanks for the speedy response!

They are very good to work with, great company. Finding the reel’s info and hopefully an exploded diagram is your first step I think. If you are brave and take a lot of pics along the way you could break it down and measure the existing drag discs and buy new ones based on that.

I’m fairly mechanically inclined. If I can find a diagram, I feel equal to breaking it down and replacing parts.

It’ll just be to determine what the model is exactly.

Put it on a shelf and enjoy the stories it holds.
