So me and 3 buddies went fishing today. We went to a local put'n'take lake. There were rainbow trout and golden trout. We bought a 4-hour pass.
We fished for 4 hours, but we didn't catch a single trout. Meanwhile we saw people coming in, and then just catching several trouts withing minutes.
We used powerbait, 2 lead sinkers and a medium sized float. We did not get a single bite.
I'm kind of a newbie at fishing. Last time i fished was with my dad 3 years ago, when i was 13.
We're going out again soon, and i wanted to know if anybody knows what we did wrong.
I would really appreciate the help, as i really want to get into fishing again, and i want to show my dad a fish i caught.

You didn’t describe your terminal tackle...but give this a try. Use small treble hooks, power bait and inflated night crawler combo. Use a light line fluoro-carbon leader, about 16 - 18” long from hook to swivel clip. 1/4 oz. sliding egg sinker behind the clasp on the main line. Set a light drag just enough to alert you to a pickup...tighten it as you hook set. I would recommend 2 lb - 6 lb leader...and 10 lb main line. Bring a landing net due to the light line.

Its possible they just knew the holes where the trout were. If they weren't cruising the shorelines trout like to stick to certain areas. Experience and time on the water will help assuming your terminal tackle is right.

Me and my Dad would go to those type of lakes every now and then for giggles. We would use Dare Devils on spinning rods and walk the lake. We always caught fish, done in 30 minutes, then again, we always caught fish at public lakes doing the same. Red and white Dare Devils have been around a very long time. Don't use the generic, don't go for the newer flash colors, junk.
