I recently purchased a 1978 28' Bayliner Victoria. Trying to get it sea worthy and need advice on a fish finder for rock cod fishing as well as lake fishing for crappy, trout etc. Social security is my only income so I can't spend a lot of money. And do I need to have GPS on it as well?

Hey Rocky, sometimes you can get a real good deal on eBay. Or check local listings for a used one.some people upgrade to the newest stuff and discard the old. The GPS is nice to have, I've had to use mine in heavy fog to rescue other boaters that didn't have it.

DEEP V hull needs to stay in channel or deep water. GPS will definitely assist you in doing so. Smart phones have it. You can get an APP called ONX and pay about 20 bucks a year to get your state on your phone. Fishfinder GPS will usually have all the waterways etc in the program. GPS is a MUST have for a DEEP V Hull like the boat you described. You can track where you have been and will keep you in deep water as to avoid running aground and ruining your propeller and out drive system on the type of boat you have described.

Heavy Rain and Fog & Wind as well as nightfall are all common situations while boating. GPS will definitely be a must have no matter what. Egghead is right on the money. Big DEEP V hull needs to stay in deep water.

Welcome to the Forum, Rocky. Boy, boats can really be a money pit! 1978, 28' Bayliner could really be a big money pit. We will have to know more about you, what are you capable of doing, the boat, does it float, the engine, does it run? Please give us more info., so we can help you. Start by putting your location, city, and state, on your location page on the profile page. Someone on the Forum may live near you and give you a hand.

I may be misunderstood you, I thought you were asking for help to get the boat seaworthy like you stated above, not just some info. on a GPS

That's why many people jokingly say " The Best day for any Boat Owner is the day you bought it and the day you sold it" They are a hole (hence HULL) in the water at which you will constantly try to fill with money. I really enjoy Classic Boats. If your Mechanically Inclined you can save a lot of cash by tinkering with it yourself. Hey Rocky is that a Ford or GM marine engine? Volvo Penta is generally GM. Ford is usually Mercruiser outdrive but there are many variations.

21 years in the Navy and the only time I ever got sea sick was tied to a pier working on my back under the dash of the skipper's runabout which had twin Volvo Pentas. That thing could scoot.

Yes, it runs very well. I put all new tune up parts in it plus filters etc. I need to either get a rebuilt carb or have mine rebuilt. It has a 350 Volvo Penta with Rochester quadrajet electric choke. I live near the central coast of Cali and will launch at either Port San Luis, Channel Islands or Ventura depending on which one opens up first.

Yes to both. Sea worthy and fish finder GPS info. I know I need a VHF radio and won't go out without one. I live near the central coast of Cali. The boat runs fine. New tune up parts, prop throttle cable etc. My home town is Bakersfield, but I will launch from either Port San Luis, Channel Islands or Ventura depending on e who opens up first. Another issue I have is whether to get a rebuilt carb online or have mine rebuilt. Engine is 350 Volvo Penta with Rochester quadrajet.

Go to top of page and find “private message” then send me your address. I will send you a fish finder w/ GPS. You may need to buy a holder for the transducer(about $20 online).
