Have baitcast rods changed?

I bought a new Pflueger President spincast reel for my wife and wanted to put it on a pretty good, thirty something year old bait cast rod. There is not enough clearance for the front cover. I tried removing the cover to mount the reel, then put the cover back on. No dice. There still is not clearance.
Have the rods changed that much?

I'm all ears. I'm not a baitcast guy really, so I'm interested too. I own a Daiwa spin-cast that I hate, but it fits on all of my baitcast rods, far as I know, but none of mine are thirty years old.

The newer ones I have are quite a bit different than old bait-casting rods I have with the sunken reel bed. You might be up against getting a newer rod that will accommodate that, specific, reel.

Catfish Hunter, That's exactly the way it looks. Thanks for your answer.

I have been looking at the pflueger President's for a little while, thinking about buying one. I read somewhere in my many searches, that due to the design and larger cover, it may not fit on some rods. So I guess the reel changed, not the rods.

Today’s rods have changed and for the best, but there are some problems. I cut a piece of a tongue depressor and put it in the reel seat and secured it. I then placed the reel on that and secured it with 2 plastic pull ties. Hey,cheaper than another rod.

It appears that the real seat sits lower on my rod. I plan to take the reel to the store where I bought it and make sure it fits on a rod.

The reel seat is lower. That’s why I built mine up with the depressor. That was ok with the wife so guess what. Best idea, take the reel and fit it like you said.

It’s probably not so much as your rod seat being different than newer rods, as it might be a reel difference. The seat bar on the new reel may be shorter than the original reel that was on your rod. I saw rod and reel combos for $47.00 on the net. Hope this is the answer to your issue.

Bought a new rod to go with the reel. I think the rods and reels are both different than they were years ago.
