A net.

If the purpose of my hike isn't fishing, I'd leave the net at home and just work the fish into shore.

I’ve seen other people use, but have not yet found for myself, a collapsible net that is flexible and twists into a small pouch. It definitely would not be sturdy enough for big fish, but would be great for smaller ones. Like I said though, I’ve only seen them, haven’t actually found one in a store yet.

You don't really need a net unless the fish are large and your tippet is small. You can bring a trout into the shallows into about an inch or two of water and twist the hook out without even touching them been doing this for decades

When fishing for small brookies I’ve used my hat before, works best if it’s like a trucker hat with plastic mesh to protect the fishes slime coating.

Wet hands is the second best thing to a rubber mesh net, IMO. I use nets when I'm guiding and want to weigh the fish, but when I'm fishing I just tail them, keep them in the water, pop out the fly, and release.

I'll tell ya' brother,if you're going hiking, you'll need as little as less to carry,I know.I hiked and fished the 'John Muir Trail' High Sierras,ca.....if I could have got a haircut I would have...every ounce of weight counts.....As the man said, just drag the fish to shore....Good Luck & enjoy!

Fishing for large (6 to 9 lb) Brown Trout in upstate New York we use a large net. This is necessary because you have to step down from a steep bank to get into the water; fishing from shore is not feasible due to the trees all along the bank. Carrying such a net is difficult even though the handle retracts— gets snagged on brush and tree limbs along the path along the river bank.

Depends on the fish. Large fish (ie.) pike, walleye I using Beckman pen net, and other to help land safely for release I have another soft net.
