fishing electronics: a primer

Hello,
Since we are locked in and since I have not done any serious fishing in 30 years, I shall take the time to update myself, then I shall take advantage of the fishing to be had here from a kayak which is so easily portable.
The lakes and dams close to me have no state maps here in NE New Mexico. Therefore, beyond Google Earth I am seeking something that I can access from an I Phone, which is small, and easily stowable..
What are the technologies out there? I'd like to find out from experienced people, not people trying to sell me something.

Thank you all in advance,

Gene So

Me, too. I got a new small outboard and a great new fishfinder as presents this past off-season, neither of which have any use to speak of. Pretty sure I can handle the mounting, tune-up and care ond feeding of the power unit, but would appreciate anyone's advice about the use of (heck, "translation of") the fish-finder, which is a light year or so ahead of anything I've been able to use in the past.

Fishfinders work right when the transducer is mounted correctly. Make sure it has no restriction ahead of it, (open flow of water, no turbulence). The main screen will show depth, surface temperature, fish if fish id is turned on as well as speed. The speed of the signal can be adjusted as well.

I would be lost without my depth finders. They help tremendously in find structure, bait fish and fish. Options include depth, surface temperature, size of fish, quantity of bait fish (usually shad for crappie), waypoints, speed, details of structure, and other important data Even the time of day is included. Lol

Helllo Joat,
Well, now you have told me about the capabilities of these devices. I am impressed. Which units do you recommend? Where do I get a schooling on extracting all this info from a device I have never seen used, ever?
Thanks for illumination,

There are some good sounders around and dual, gps/sounders. Depending on where you fish should determine what you need, no use getting top of the range if you fish small lakes or rivers, they're for being offshore with more capabilities. Many years back I had 2 on my boat, one I used for gps and the other was for showing depths well past 1000 ft, showed bait schools mid water and big fish as well. Go online and do a search on depth sounders and should find latest and brands.

Hello,
I am being reintroduced to fishing and want to fish primarily for walleyes, but also Bass and trout here in the Rockies. I can see concentrating on two dam areas for walleyes and realize since I have never owned a depth finder etc. I want to find one really good one, preferably smaller unit that will work well in the kayak I shall be purchasing. Think of a fisherman with a 30 year lapse, due to differing priorities. Now, I am retired and relocated so have a huge amount of knowledge to acquire, but now have the time to acquire it.

Hello, br I am being reintroduced to fishing and w... (show quote)

Look at Garmin, lowrance, hummingbird. All good sounders, they have base models that will do what you want. Speed, depth, fish id. I always run on lower end of sensitivity so don't get many false readings. Whatever you decide on read about the directions. Make sure the transducer has clear water when moving.
