In any case when usein circle hooks, you wait till the line gets tight and just keep pressure on the line while reelin. They will start swimming off and the line comes tight and that is when you keep pressure and reel.

I like those circle hooks they let the fish hook themselves Just let them load up on the line and start reeling, don't set the hook. Fishing for catfish and bass I point the rod at the fish and reel if the fish comes to me I may sweep right or left and if I need to maybe up to keep tension on the line. One good thing about the hooks is that the fish will almost be hooked in the corner of the mouth, with very few deep hook ups.

Welcome to the Forum, N-f. Circle hooks work well for the young kids to use too.

New Fisherman: The real answer is You don't jerk at all. My introduction to circle hook fishing was with a guide in the Florida keys. His instructions were when I got a bite, to simply reel fast, this allows the circle hook to firmly set itself int the jaw of the fish. It seemed to work except when a shark would bite the line into, and we wern't fishing for sharks. Just Sayin...RJS

NF , are you surf fishing ? If so then they will hook their self . I usually use J hooks . Whiting hit so hard it’s usually easy to hook them. But if using a circle hook wait until
The rod bends then just reel without setting hook. Good luck

I caught 11 channel cats today using circle hooks, and only one of them required forceps to reach the hook in it’s throat. Unfortunately all eleven of them were 12” or shorter....
Oh well, still had fun; better than sitting at home. I was fishing a farm pond by myself. All alone.

anytime you feel a nibble its time to set the hook. The circle hook allows the fish to run and it sets the hook as its pulling your line. Whiting (aka Virginia Mullet in North Carolina) are excellent eating and very easy to cook.

A circle hook hooks the fish as you are reeling in the line. The circle hook is easy to remove and allows you the opportunity to release a smaller fish that is not regulation size. I love circle hooks.
