I need fishing help!

I have a good bit of experience fishing in Florida (saltwater) mainly snook, redfish, mangrove snappers. I know the fish well and can rig my poles accordingly.

I now live in West Virginia, and of course...no saltwater! I bought my yak in January and love it, getting skunked is still a nice day cause I’m on the water, But like I would like to have a FISHING kayak, not a boat to hail my gear lol

Does anyone have advice, around here there’s bass, trout, cats, crappie, and a few other. I love lure fishing, as opposed to bait.

I always used plastic swimmers in Florida, and have been using plastic minnows/worms here, as well as experimenting with spinnerbait.

Advice for any of this would be great, I don’t know the best times/places where fish like to congregate like I do in the bay in Florida. As well as behavior of the fish.

Thanks in advanced!

Back when I Lived in WV, I did mostly Catfishing, but in the lakes I fished, mostly Elk Fork Lake (AKA Gay lake, because it's on Gay Road in Jackson county) I always ended catching a few off of live worms doing a slow retrieve to check my bait. So I'd say soft plastics shouldn't be too bad of a choice if you do a slow retrieve. Maybe a Neko or Ned or Texas. But I mostly fished that lake, so who knows about the rest of the state.

Thanks, I live in Charleston so Kanawha River, coal river and a few close lakes.

I’ve been fighting with cats, i always pull too early, so the hook doesn’t set. I wanna catch a bass lol it’s one of my fav fish (I caught one when I was like 9, but that’s the only freshwater fish I’ve ever caught)

I was never good at bass. That's my Wife's domain. We were visiting her grandaddy down on the Okeechobee lake and we fished a couple times and she caught all the bass lol

I'm in Northern Virginia, so relatively close. I know there is some great fishing over there, but I'm not too familiar with the places.

The little swimbaits will do great once it warms up more. Its still a little on the cold and early side for the bite to be great. The fish are still coming out of their wintering holes. I took my kayak out on a river today and got a nice smallmouth on a zoom tiny fluke in arkansas shiner color.

Look into drop shotting, that's something I started last year and it gets great once it warms up some. My fish today was on a drop shot. Texas rigging works great as well. If you use facebook, look into local facebook fishing groups or reports for the area. I'm in a few locals on facebook and I can see what all is happening in the differenr waterways around me.

Best of luck, don't give up, and don't make it too complicated.

You might try woodrum lake from Charleston go north on I 77 to the kenna exit from Charleston it’s around maybe 18 miles or so. After exiting 77 go left again for about 5 miles the road will tee go left again for another 5 miles the lake is on the right. There in not much bank fishing but it would be good lake to kayak fish. Great crappie and bass lake

It sounds like you’ve got the tackle you just need a spot. My suggestion would be woodrum lake. Get on 77 head north toward Parkersburg. About maybe 18 miles out of Charleston take the Kenna exit and go left in 5 or six miles the road will Tee. Go left again for another 5 or 6 miles the lake will be on the right. It doesn’t have much bank fishing but it’s a good kayak lake. It’s loaded with bass and it is catch and release just on the bass. Lot’s of crappie channel cats and nice bluegills and you can keep them if you choose. Just work the banks with soft plastic and your spinner baits. Lots of cover to fish. And I think the lake is between two and five hundred acres.
