absolutely has nothing to do with fishing just a page from my past when I was 17 years old.

It was in the winter of 1949/1950 near Cross Plains Texas, Callahan County. We had a bad ice storm and everything was coated with 1/2 inch or so of ice. I was the projectionist at the theater in Cross Plains at the time. The owner decided to close that night and was talking to the owner in Rising Star and town near by. Rising Star was going to show anyway. Rising Star was showing "God's Little Acre" which my boss was not going to show. Since we closed this was my chance to go see the movie in Rising Star. I had a friend who had a 1919 Model T sedan and it would go most everywhere. Four of us decided to go Rising Star to the movie. (this shows how smart a group of 16 and 17 year old boy are) It was already dark when we departed Cross Plains heading to Rising Star (approx 14 miles). The head lights on the Model T were so dim you nearly had to strike a match to see if they were burning. As we proceeded on our way we were going down a small hill and a cow appeared in the middle of the road walking in the same direction we were going. Well we hit her in the rear end. Thank God we were not going very fast. The Model T's has a strong front bumper and was very springy. Of course it knocked her down and she slid out in front of us a ways. Just as she started to get up (for those of you that don't know this a cows gets up with her back legs first) we contacted her again. The third time we hit her she slid off the side of the road. Once we got stopped we went back on foot to check on her but could not find her. We never got to Rising Star to see the movie.

The same four later went to Baird Texas to see "God's Little Acre". We did see the movie and when we cam out of the theater it was storming. We were not in the Model T this time but in a 35 Ford coupe. It was crowded but we managed. As we left town the car was not running very well so we were going to pull off the road and check if someone had removed so spark plug wire, which was not unusual back then. We could not get the doors open and decided it was because the car was in a bind. Got back on the road and about a quarter mile up the road the car started running correctly. The next day we found out there had been a twister in Baird that night. Where we stopped on the side of the road was where the twister crossed the road so I guess we were nearly caught in the twister. God looks out for children and old people.

May God was trying to keep us from seeing the movie the first time and punishing us for seeing it the second time.

Good stories, but I believe you either got your movie (God's Little Acre) or your date (1949/50) incorrect. I'm a bit of a movie buff and I'm sure that God's Little Acre was released in 1958 or 59. A young Michael Landon was in that film, but not that young. He would have been about 14 in 1950, and preparing to go to Southern Cal on an athletic scholarship in a few years, where he threw the javelin. Michael started in show biz in the very late fifties. I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Remember that one? And then of course, Little Joe. So if you and your friends were 16 in 1950 that would make you 86 right now? If that's true, it had to be a different movie.

Three C's: You have proven a point I have trying to make for several years. Each of us has a lot of stories in us. If we don't record them in some fashion, they die when we go. You should write them down, record on your PC, or recorder. (Amazon now offers small recorders that are solid state and some are less than $20!

You also dredged up another of my memories. My dad had a 1934 Ford Coupe that he used to get around on the leases that he pumped. It was what I used to get to jobs, football practice, and finally dating. It didn't have good brakes, so I had to learn how to take it into a slide, compensate and then release the brakes to keep that sweet little car on the road. I have old H.S. girl friends who remind me of that car! Just sayin...RJS

Hello 3 C's: I just checked my map to be sure where Allen TX was. You are not far from Rockwall and Dallas.
there are storytelling guilds, or clubs in Rockwall, Dallas, and Denton. You might check one of these out after the virus is gone. They do a lot of storytelling, and if you are exposed, you will remember more stories than you ever thought possible. Just Sayin...RJS

Hey 3Cs, my sister lives in Fate. Stay with her when I'm back there in Texas. We should try to get together next time I'm there. Have fished Lake Lavon before. You could show me how it's done.

Both films based on books by the same author, Erskine Caldwell. Pretty scandalous stuff for their times. Yeah, as we progress, the needle tends to skip a little more often than it once did. That's alright, at 88 you're allowed a hitch or two. I's just tryin to help out.

Glad you spoke up. It has gotten to the point with PC that people are afraid to speak up. Sometime that gets me in trouble.
