Do it.

For one, its not that hard. Pick up a complete kit from mudhole.com with everything you need. Buy some "a" size thread 100yards to go with the kit, the stuff it comes with is heavier than you will like.

I always wanted to build rods, started with mudhole complete kit i bought on holiday for 15% off. Basically got the rod complete component kit for free and paid only for tool kit. Now when ever i want, i can build a rod. Still buy them occasionally too.

Totally worth it.

I will add to this a tip, dont use the orange thread tensioner just the wing nuts on the spool...make life so much easier.

About $180 for turnkey rod building kit from mudhole. All the tools and parts to make 1 fishing rod. If you wait for a sale you can get %15 off that brings it to about 150.

Last thing to add...if budget isnt as much of a concern for and you plan on long term purchase, i wouldnt get the tool kit. Variable speed rod dryer with wire chuck would be the best upgrade to the kit. And size "a" thread haha

Mudhole, has everything you will need. First watch a few videos on you tube. I started with a turnkey rod kit 7 years ago. Made about a dozen rods with it. Then got a power wrapper built a 12×4 foot table in my basement. Now I have a full blown set up. The part of getting started is trying to figure out what guide sizes and tip tube sizes to order. After that it's perty easy. Each step takes time but after a few you will be up and running. PM me for more if you want to

Or you could PM me, I built rods for 45 years but I don't do much of it anymore. Or, you could PM Kerry Hanson, he is the best I know of around on the Forum. There are a lot of guys on the Forum that do it.

Be careful what you ask for. You might get it. I started by repairing a guide with old dacron line and wrapping by hand and ended up here

Thanks guys! I built a couple of nice flyrods many years ago and have enjoyed them ever since --- like good friends and good memories. You-all have encouraged me to get back to doing it again. I remember running the thread through a book as a line-tensioner. There are ways to do it cheap but good.
