At the risk of sounding presumptuous, my bet is that if you look around and put the word out that you’re interested in getting started, there’s someone right there in western NC that would make available on loan, rent, or buy cheap, a decent outfit to use just to let you get a feel for it and see if you really like flyfishing. Not everyone who tries it likes it. To some it seems there too much to fiddle with, but that’s all personal choice. One can get as deep into it as one desires. An experienced flyfisher can easily cast and catch with a modicum of equipment, but there is more finesse in using better stuff. Ex: i can drive a 16d nail with a brick or a Craftsman hammer, but i’ll reach for the Estwing every time. Don’t be embarrassed by seeking some local hands-on guidance and advice. Let me know what your experience is over at HighRidge Outfitters; guys hang out there who know your area. Best wishes.

Find an L. L. bean or an Orvis spend a few dollars and learn the easy way. You won't regret it one bit.

Hey there Cdb glad to hear you want to try the fly 👍I use to have a pretty good rod once upon a time ago, well it's been gone for years now and I can't afford to go out and get a new one like it, anyway was at Walmart and found one for about 50 and I really do think it works pretty good. Nothing like my old one ever did but I like it.
So give it a try, I think it's a good learning stick. Happy casting.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do so saving up.

Good plan. Don’t be discouraged. You will soon be hitting the water, raising fish and ultimately, landing your first.

I jkust started fly fishing last year. And I haven't run into a fly fisherman that wouldn't stop and help you out!! I had one give me half a dozen flies that "matched the hatch".

I would suggest going to you closest bass Pro or Cabela's and ask the fly fishing department about lessons. I took my first lessons at BP. Once I was bit by the bug I went to LL Bean for a two day immersion course.

In the short time I've been fly fishing I haven met a snooty fly fisherman yet bud.

Amazon has a martin kit for $25 and a topfort kit for $80. Both are Chinese and not the quality recommended by enthusiasts. But all that said, it’s something you can get out and try it out just don’t get discouraged. Or keep a lookout at garage sales etc. I’m about having fun with whatever you can afford. Good luck. 👍
