I’m heading up to the Salmon river in New York to do some fly fishing for steelhead. I’m basically new at fly fishing for them, anyone have any suggestions as to what would be the best flies to use? Thanks and tight lines to all.

Don't know much about New York steelies, but if they're anything like west coast ones they love roe, so a roe imitation. And then there's the universally fish-attractive wooly bugger. Both drifted under an indicator, maybe even at the same time? If the water's clear, lighter colored ones. Muddy, darker. Go catch some.

Try just a single orange or red bead up against a red Hook size 1 and a strike indicator.slide the bead up against the hook and break a toothpick off in it to hold in place. That should do the trick.might need a little split sinker to sink it. ya might put the bead about 2"-4" above the hook also.

My experience in MI, water temperature determined fly size, the colder the water the larger the fly. Leader weight is also important, the lighter the better. The 3 flies I used were wiggler, woolybugger, and spawn patterns. Variations in colors were important when water was stained, chartreuse tails. Tight lines!

If the suckers are in and spawning go with a sucker spawn pattern

If you have the time, try the Little Sandy Creek, it’s not as crowded.
Fly patterns include streamers and egg sack patterns.

I've had luck with black stoneflies. I usually peg a small bead about 6 inches from the fly or you can just let the bead float above the fly.

If you're not a flies only purist, you'll have better luck in the Fall and early winter with plastic beads that look like salmon eggs. Very effective and there's a lot of youtube videos showing how to set them up and peg them.
