High viz braid

Going to try braid to leader on my finesse set up. Question, why do so many people using neon green or yellow braid wouldn't a natural green be less detectable by fish ? Or is there a reason why bright is better?

Bright makes it a little easier to see a bite and most people tie a mono or flouro leader on the end. I would strongly advise you to tie a 4-6 ft leader on the end of the braid, you can get away without a leader when fishing top water, frogs, etc. but not with anything else.

Great advice Blob! Flouro or mono leader definitely the way to go. The bright line makes it easier to see your line moving in the water when getting those subtle bites when fishing finesse baits. Sometimes, especially when I'm fishing the drop shot, the bass will take the worm and swim towards me. Cant feel any shakes or twitches, only feel slack and see my hivis line moving towards me. When that happens reel down and set that hook!

The leader material will mitigate the visibility of the braid - the fish won’t see the braid. They’ll see nothing (if you use a quality mono or fluoro).

What’s the depth/clarity of the water you’re fishing? What type (lake, river, etc.)? Also what type of lure or bait are you using? Oh! And what fish you hunting for??

Answers to those questions are pretty critical when determining what strength, length, and type of leader line.

I’m fishing for winter steelhead in the PNW right now. I use 30 lb hi-via yellow braid (P-Line hydrofloat) as main tied with a double uniknot to a 15 lb fluorocarbon leader. This gives me the chance to see where my line is at in the water but because I’m running a long 5-6 ft leader (I’m changing colors and types of spoons, spinners, and jigs constantly) the fish never see the braid attached to the lure.

Does this help?

It's a creek fed resivior. Usually stained water. Depth will vary 5 to maybe 12 foot . It will be or finesse presentations for bass . Small ned rigs or weightless worms or flukes. Maybe a drop shot rig in the right lake. I'm guessing 8 pound floro to 15 pound braid. The high vis makes sense for bite detection.

I was just curious on the purpose of the high viz braid. Braid in its self is more sensitive that pairs with the higher viz makes sense

I answered to your main post before I saw this but I use high viz PowerPro on my Ned rig rod. I use a 6-8 ft leader and I catch a ton of fish. I have tied directly to the Ned with the high viz stuff and I still got bit, but where I'm at isn't pressured as much as some places.

I generally finesse fish and i run high viz braid. Its a budget thing as well as a sight thing. I don't know why but around here the high vi stuff is 2-3 bucks cheaper. I use a leader most of the time anyways so I might as well save a few bucks.

Also i have tide straight to yellow braid and I have caught fish. Where I'm at I don't believe fish are line shy, though I think they can be in other places.

Braid has excellent tight line sensitivity but is completely dead once you get some slack in it. Hi Viz braid lets you visually detect bites when your line is slacked.

It's basically all I use in braid... I like to see my line to manage it and fight fish better....I do tend to take a sharpie in a natural color like brown or a spike it marker to the last 12' +/-. I dont think line visibility matters for 95% LM bass fishing, but do think if it did- its highly questionable when everyone says to take a BLACK sharpie to braid...That just draws a straightline to your lure much of the time....nor do I fish enviroments w/the type of cover thats real-world more abrasive to a comprable diameter braid vs flouro/nylon.

I fish almost everything on braid to leader. I've gone from green braid (PP) to hi-vis pink and lime green. I don't think I'm giving any/many bites away. The color definitely helps with bite detection and line handling. FWIW, I'm using #8-#12 Seaguar Red leaders, 12' long for most applications, 18' for jerkbaits. DS and some topwater still use mono.

My primary use was offshore for color coded line separation sans lure identification !
Others use it for surfcasting etc !
I don’t like it for shallow water presentations even on float set ups unless u can utilize a long leader !
That line can be very visible in clear shallow waters.
I don’t like braid for freshwater use in most cases however deep jigging is one I do can give u heads up on drop hit.
