Kayak fishing: Rod holders that pivot from vertical to horizontal

I fish a few places with low hanging branches and unavoidable bridges with just a couple feet between the water and the ceiling. Last year I had two RAM rod holders attached to the kayak that I would push down to make the rods horizontal so they wouldn’t catch branches or scrape the bridge.

This year I plan on taking four rods every trip. I want to DIY a milk crate with PVC rod holders that can rotate or pivot between vertical and horizontal positioning. Has anyone done this before or have any idea on how to do it? I have a Jackson Cruise 10.

Pretty much, yeah. I’m hoping to find a way to do it myself for much cheaper than buying new adjustable rod holders though.

$18 for two of them... not sure how much cheaper you are going to be able to do it yourself. Time and materials will equal that pretty quickly.

Are you trying to use these pivoting rod holders to fish out of (i.e. bait fishing, rod in holder till fish bites) or just a place to store rods you're not actively using? I have an idea I could draw up but it wouldn't be suitable for storing rods with active lines in the water.

For that matter I dont even trust my Ram mounts for that... if I'm bait fishing with a rod in a holder it will be one of the two flush mount holders built into my kayak.

The rod holders will only be for storage so it doesn't need to be heavy duty. You're right about the Ram mounts, I've tightened mine down as far as they can go and I can still slide the rod holder around them without much force. I've read that wrapping a balloon around the ball makes it better.

I'd love to see your idea!

That's a great example of what I'm looking for. I don't have flush rod holders but I'm sure I can apply that idea somehow.

With a milk crate the normal way to mount pvc pipe for a rod holder to the crate is by way of wire ties. Maybe consider a bold extending through the pvc into the crate instead of wire ties with a wing nut on the inside of the crate to loosen for pivoting.
