Welcome to the Forum, Sailorgirl, talk to the locals on the pier or the beach and the bait shops.
Sg welcome to the forum.
When you do catch could you share pictures? Please?
Welcome to the Fishingstage and thank you for joining please share pictures and stories as they transpire.
Bait for Salt Water Fishing
Squid or Calamari usually can find it in a grocery store frozen section. Cut it into smaller pieces and use barbed hooks.
Fish parts once you catch fish use some of the meat or skin ...fins with little meat etc. Don't use TOO LARGE of bait. Start Small. Local bait store should give you information but you don't need to spend a bunch on their selling you more than you need.
Shrimp or any UNCOOKED sliver of fresh fish from seafood dept at grocery store.
Go to Pier and see what people use..don't be afraid to ask them what they use. Look at their set up on end of line.

Hey SG, welcome to the stage. Where are you located? Could you put it in your profile so we all will know and don't keep askin? I live bout an hour north of SF in Windsor, near Santa Rosa.
Hi Sailorgirl and welcome to the fishing stage. I fish the coast above Bodega Bay whenever I get a chance to get over there, but I am not familiar with your part of California. There is a very good book available from Amazon called Surf Fishing: The Light Line Revolution by Bill Varney. Bill runs a shop down L.A. way and you can email him at fishthesurf.com for information on fishing in you area. As far as I know, the entire coast of California is loaded with surf perch. That's what I fish for and in targeting them you never know what you might catch. The perch are smallish, they probably average around a pound and a half or so, a 4 pounder would be a monster. They are a blast on light gear and they are also good eating if that's your thing. And like I said, you never know when you're gonna hook into a striper, a salmon, a halibut or whatever. As far as bait, the perch primarily feed on sand crabs, so either harvest the live ones on the beach or Berkley makes a gulp sand crab that works really well. Also sand worms or blood worms work great, and Berkley also makes gulp sand worms. As far a lures, motor oil colored grubs work on a Carolina rig. And the lucky craft 100 or 110 surf pointer will catch anything that swims and eats. Hope that helps. Get out there and fish girl!
And go on YouTube and search for fishing in your area. There's tons available.
