Just after ice out, Walleye fisherman by the thousands try their luck at this Walleye fishing mega!

Last March 2019, the fishing was phenomenal with millions of walleye heading into the river from Lake Erie.
Limits were the norm, with eye popping size fish early in the run.

In 2017, the April run was also fantastic! The average size fish was 5-10lbs. 10lbers don’t get much more than a glance with many 7-9 lb. fish, early in the run.

Last year with the late ice out the fishing was fantastic about the 10th of April. Usually it starts about the first week in April. when the pigs move in!

You may want to consider a trip if you love walleye and don’t mind fishing in the industrial wasteland of Detroit.

Just remember, there will be wall to wall boats, I say give it a try. However, if you like to using planer boards or long flat lines and nothing else, take a pass!

No matter how or where you fish, there is no better Walleye fishing in the World!

Thanks for looking.....Good Luck!

Too many boats, people and urban grit for me. I would rather have solitude and no fish than the Detroit River. I guess each to their own, but fishing is much more than catching fish for me.

Here is a link to Michigan's consumption guidelines:https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdch/MDCH_EAT_SAFE_FISH_GUIDE_-_SOUTHEAST_MI_WEB_455358_7.pdf

Basically, it states you can eat six servings per year if the walleye is caught in either Lake Huron or Lake Erie and tributaries. A serving is defined as 8 ounces for a 180 lb. person, 4 ounces for a 90 pound person and 2 ounces for someone under 45 lbs. with one ounce adjustments for every 20 lb. change.

They do not speak much about size of fish in relation to Lakes Erie or Huron, but in the general statewide advisories, they cut servings in half for all walleyes over 20". It is well known that. the larger the fish, the more contaminants they have.

Overall, it appears that the fish is considered OK, but at a fairly restricted level of consumption. I guess if you are catching to eat, one 10 lb. fish would supply anywhere from about the right amount to double the right amount for a 180 lb. person for a year.

So I guess if you want to follow the advisories, you can pretty much stop at one fish per person at the 10 lb. level.

On a side note, if you are old like me, the damage has probably already been done and there is nothing left to worry about!

Thanks. I've caught a lot of walleyes in my day, but none even close to ten pounds. I'm sure I probably light up like a Chrismas tree in the dark from all the fish I've eaten over the years, too. Won't stop now. Too late anyway.

I now live in northern lower Michigan near Traverse City but I lived 10 years south of Detroit near the end of the Detroit river emptying out into lake Erie. YES!!! Fantastic fishing and in the Flat Rock/Gibraltar areas by the lake erie mateo Park-great fishing and huge new marina to get boats in/out. Also down near the Mile marker 11 in Monroe, Mi is great area to fish out in the lake.
