3/70 to 11/71 stationed in Panama and then Eglin until 8 /73. Went back to San Antonio for business somewhere around 08 and saw those raised barracks and a lot of memories came marching back. Boy did I ever hate those parades. Had 2 while stationed in Panama and that was beyond sucking.

Wow Plum. I was there from 9/69-1/70. Then onto Shepherd until 4/70. I’m sure we crossed paths some 50yrs ago. I was a reciprocating aircraft mechanic. Then went onto Scott AFB in Illinois.

Dozer Dave I was a Prop tech. Worked along side with quite a few of those recip mechanics. Did a few TDY's with them as well.

That it is. Recip and Prop shop were in one building in Panama. They moved in the jet mechanics and you could feel the tension between the recip and jet guys.

I worked on OV 10, T 29, C 123, C 131, C 47, C 124, U2's, and at one time was asked to work om a chopper by some captain in the control tower told me to get my butt on the flight line. Response was they got rotors Capt. not props. Click went the phone.

What aircraft did you work on?

Ah yes the C 130. Probably worked some others as well. The C 123 was my specialty. Even got to check out Gen. Westmoreland's shinny C 123 in panama when he passed thru one time.

Saw some of our old P 51's in the 70's in another country. Now there was some history and they were being used in a little turf war in central America at the time.

PBob: Those P-51's were part of a contract by the AF given to Bolivia and San Salvadore. We built them during the late sixties at Cavalier Aircraft in Sarasota Fl. Totally refurbished and equipped with rocket pods and 6-50 cal machine guns. I worked as an avionics specialist and auto pilot spec.

Wow MadPole that's amazing. You are correct on San Salvadore. I was TDY there for a few days and the following month in Honduras. Saw P 51's there also someone must of sold a few to them.

Couldn't get it straight in my 20 year old mind what was going on with those two countries, just wanted to get back to Panama.

If you want an interesting read because it is to much for this forum, goggle San Salvadore and Honduras war. Would have liked to read about it then instead of 50 years later.

We built 2 for the US Army (General's Toys) and numerous others for Fat Cats and rich boys. I was lucky that my job afforded me the luxury to get to fly in them. President of the Company was an Ace in WWII in a P51 and loved to "buzz" the hangar. I even got to ride along during a "dogfight" we had with one of the other Company pilots. Awesome experience!

For sure on that experience. Funny how to this day I can hear that Engine. Words can not express the sound as the memory can still hear it.

Rolls Royce Merlin "V 12" with 6 inch exhaust pipes...it was LOUD!! Had to wear headphones on board. Also had to pick myself up off the floor after one of Gerry Tyler's "buzz" jobs. He would call the tower and ask for clearance to perform a "fly-by demonstration" , He would dive down to the treetops gaining all the speed he could, pass over the hangar and when he reached the edge of the airport he would pull the nose straight up and slowly rotate up to several thousand feet.
