boat deck replacement options

I am in the process of adding plywood decking to an aluminum Jon boat. I know I can go with carpet, vinyl or paint. I am leaning towards the paint. There are so many new type coatings on the market it is mind boggling. I like the anti-skid and rubberized properties of some of them. With so many options I figured asking for advice from someone who has used them may help me decide.

Hey bonzo,cant give u any info on rubber stuff,but i would think it gets crazy hot in summer.carpet might b better option imo

Hello Al. thanks for the reply. I have used carpet before. It has a few drawbacks. Where are you going with a boat this time of year?

Did you know that back in the early 80's the state record largemouth came out of Shahola? A guy from the mid-valley area [Jessup] caught it. I believe it was in the 10+ lb. range. He only held the record for a short time before being bested. I think it was only a year or so. I remember this because I lived near there then.

Bonzo, I have a 14 ft v hull that I built a front deck of plywood and 2x4's. And added a front seat on pedestal. It only has a 8 hr. motor and the extra weight makes it sit a little low in the water. And now it will only go about 8 miles per hour top speed. I was thinking about tearing the deck back out. But I bought a new boat instead. The 14 ft. Is for sale.

Regardless of the final topping (carpet, whatever), do give the plywood (even if it's "Marine grade" or CDX) a sealer coat of SOMETHING....ON ALL SIDES, TOP, BOTTOM, EDGES !!! I have carpet over Baltic Birch ply, in my drift boat, mainly because we often have studded boots on, river fishing. In my lake boat, I used "CleanMachine" doormats(the mats with plastic heavy duty "grass" surface, available at Hdwe or Big box),Gorilla Tape joined, for a skid-proof and waterproof (and comfy if you go barefoot !) floor. Easy to cut for snug fit and not particularly a big expense.
I like the spray-on truckbed liner, but might be a bit slippery, depending on application method (and , on ply...still should seal FIRST with primer).
Cheapest and fastest...non-glossy durable paint with skid-proof "grit"(ground walnut shells or other product, from paint store, added in last coat) or ....after paint HAS TOTALLY CURED( like several days, for sure !) add skid strips appropriately placed. Good luck !

Hello Randy. Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about that. I read where you should consider 1/2 inch plywood and 2x2's to reduce the weight. Also possibly tubular aluminum.

Hello Fixorfish.Thanks for the reply.I believe you are right. Treated lumber,plywood is only protected until you make cuts and then it needs attention to that cut. I will check out the other ideas.Thanks.
