Had this reel given to me. Anyone know anything about how good a reel it is.
there used to be a couple of guys on here, bottomcoon and redmeansdistortion, that know a whole lot about Ambassdeur reels. Maybe PM one of the them. Or maybe one will chime in. I do know that the Ambassadeurs that were made in Sweden were among their top of the line. This one looks like it could use a good cleaning. I have a similar Ambassadeur round reel that I got for Christmas last year, and I love it, very nice reel.
Thanks Spirit, Your right it does need a major cleaning came out of an old shed. Don’t have any idea how old it is.
Hello Bossman: Welcome, and yes, you have a quality reel there. For the time it was at the tops of the list.
In the late 1950's, we had just opened an outboard motor, boats, and sporting goods business in Gainesville. One night someone broke in and among other things, took some reels. Since they weren't familiar with Ambassador reels, they left the most expensive reels, but took some other cheaper ones.
In our shop, they also took a new 10 hp Evenrude motor. It was still in the shipping carton and from the looks of things, it must have taken them more than an hour to get the motor out of the crate! Ignorant bastards! just sayin...RJS
RJS, thanks for your response. Going to give the reel a good cleaning and put it to work. I do have an old ambassador 5000 reel I bought when I was 15 and still use it. Makes that one 53 yrs old now.
( As far as the Evenrude goes, not all the knives in the drawer are that sharp, takes all kinds.)
Well, during the Civil war there was a hideout for deserters, renegades, Indians who would not stay on the reservation which was called the “robbers roost” just across the Red River in Indian Territory, which we suspected was still home for the culprits!

This is a great reel that can last forever if you take care of it.
All of my baitcasting reels are Ambassadeurs and all of them are more than 20 years old. I clean them every two years and they are like new operationally.
My reels get very heavy use...

Muskyhunter, Ivey thanks for your input and the video, because this reel needs a good cleaning.
Bossman, I sent you a private message.
I have an ultracast Ambassadeur rebuild in progress right now!

5600C, excellent reel. Originally made for stripers, heavy reel to use fo casting all day. Holds a lot of line. 5600C3 replaced it 70's or early 80's, at the time ABU Garcia was the best casting reel made. I have 5500c, 5500C3 4600C3 5500C4 's some are 40 years old . I still use them every time I go fishing. I clean them throughly at least once a year. Very smooth reels and durable. As long as they are cleaned a d lubed properly they will last forever. DEEJAY

The reel looks like it was used very little just needs cleaning. I use Marvel Mystery Oil to cleanall reels it will dissolve the grease and oil even if it is dried up. Use a tooth brush or q-tip to helpget the debris out, rinse with alcohol to rinse out let dry and relube especially clean the worm gear a pall. You will ha e more trouble from that than anything. The reel I posted the picture of is a 5500C3. It needed a lot of cleaning. The worm gear cover couldn't even slide out because of the hardened grime at the edges. The inside of the right side plate had grease that had caramelized. Even with all of the caramelized grease the gears and bearings were bone dry. The idler gear was covered in hardened grease.
This reel operated quite smoothly considering the condition.
The photo of the worm gear and cover shows the buildup that was making it hard to get the cover out. It also shows a clean worm gear next to the worm gear that was in the reel.
DeeJay and Musky thank you for your knowledge and input very much appreciated.
