Recommendations for beginner fishing kit?

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I want to get him his own tackle box full of some essentials. When we went fishing all last summer, he relied on his friends or his dad for their fishing supplies, and I want him to have his own so that he doesn't have to rely on them.

Only thing is, I know absolutely nothing about fishing. I was thinking of going to Bass Pro to ask someone there and have them help me get a tackle box together, but I figured that would end up being a lot more expensive than if I go to walmart instead. I just don't know that I can rely on people at walmart to know as much as someone at Bass Pro would know.

We live in Arizona if that helps, typically we fish at the Salt River or in Sedona or random lakes here and there. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

How much you looking to spend. Do you want a pre assembled kit or separate stuff you put together. Pre assembled woo be the cheapest but the quality and variety won’t be the best. I have some stuff from variety packs as a kid and it’s all junk. Buying everything separate will be better but maybe slightly more expensive and complex.

I was thinking maybe $100 total for a tackle box and some basics! I was looking at the pre assembled kits, which would be easier, but I definitely want good quality over junk that wouldn't last/work. I'm definitely willing to buy separate if it means better quality!

Rapala minnows, roostertail and mepps spinners, roadrunner jigs, curly tail jigs, marabou jigs and spoons will work almost anywhere. Chartreuse and white colors and gold and silver blades in 1/8 to 1/4 ounce sizes. Almost anywhere in the US these things will work for bass, panfish, trout and walleye. Also sandbass and hybrids will hit these lures.

The best idea is to go to a local fish shop and ask them for the gear best suited for your area. Gear changes drastically depending on the place you are. My redfishing gear I use on the flats here in Florida wouldn’t be right for say a guy pyke fishing in the finger lakes.

This is the best advice. I have 4 different rods and a large variety of tackle all specific for where and what I am fishing. Is it an option to go shopping with one of the friends he’s been fishing with? Or gift card so he can get whatever lures he prefers?

I could try and ask his friend that he fishes with, that's a great idea! And a gift card is definitely an option, he just isn't the type to do things if that makes sense, so I'd rather get everything so he already has it! The gift card would probably just sit for months and months and never get used! Thank you for your help!

If he has nothing $100 can buy a lot. Instead of tackle boxes a lot of people including me use organizer trays. The basics like j hooks and sinkers and pretty cheap as well.

Cool, thank you! I saw a lunch box looking case with a bunch of organizer trays, is that kind of what you're talking about? Just the trays? Or do you put the organizer trays in a backpack or something?

I use just trays but I have a backpack that was military surplus. The trays are less than $2 a piece and I can organize them for different species of fish. The lunch bag ones are awesome though. If his father lives close take him to lunch and then shopping for fishing stuff. His advice would be extremely helpful since he fishes the area and knows what you husband was borrowing in the fishing trips.

Hoss: No matter what you throw $100 at, your son will eventually find it is likely to be junk! The previous replies are on target. Take a fisherman friend along and be careful in their selection. Don't go overboard until he gains some experience with what is working. Experienced fishermen have built their tackle box(s) over time with tried and true baits. A good friend who is also an experienced fisherman can cut this short by helping you/your son to be more selective. Pre-assembled kits are for novices who have money but no experience. You go to a tackle shop and will see thousands of beautifully painted lures. They are to catch the fisherman, not necessarily the fish.

There is a saying that 80% of the fish are caught by 20% of the fishermen. I'm convinced the same formula works for the tackle in the shops, and maybe even worse. Just sayin...RJS

Since you don't want to get him a gift certificate, I think you could call his fishing friend and have him go with you. That would be the biggest help. Tell the friend you can't spend over $100. He should fix you up with a good haul. My experience with WalMart is that the people in my fishing department don't seem to know that much. Just don't let your boyfriend catch you out with his fishing Buddy. You could be in trouble and then would have to explain your reasons. Your boyfriend might get jealous. Or maybe his friend could tell you what to buy and where to buy it in your area.
