Good Morning All!

I am curious if any of you have researched downriggers and have any recommendations.

I have an 18’ Weldcraft Angler that we use on local lakes and out on the Oregon Coast. We are hoping to troll for Lake Trout, Kokanee and eventually, land locked Chinook salmon.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks Anglers!

Well a question like this is Gunna start an argument.lol I am Cannon fan. I used the mag 10's for ever. But a few years ago I went to the Digitrolls, I love em.lakers will hand in the bottom alot. I can set how far off bottom I want and adjust the sensitivity I want. Hit a button. Cannon Ball goes down and tracks the bottom by its self. Once in awhile I reel up some slack on my pole and reel in fish but no more baby sitting and hung up gear. And easy to use.

Look into the Scotty's. I was pleased with Cannon's for years, put the problem with Cannons is that when they get older Cannon quits supporting the parts required to fix them. I have a garage full of Mag 10's and Mag 10A's needing parts that don't exist.

The Scotty motors only work half the time of the Cannons, since the only require gravity to drop the balls. Cannon makes a good product, but I now only run Scotty's. Hope this helps..... I am relatively new to this forum. I have been fishing 50 years, but I learn something new each day I visit the forum. Thanx

ReelT... where are you expecting to find "landlocked CHINOOK" ? Sockeyes...yes, that would be a Kokanee... except some "plants" by someone doing so clandestinely, and a "one time experiment" in a local reservoir, by Cole Rivers Hatchery, never heard of "black mouths" being landlocked. (BTW... never saw or heard of any after a couple of months... some say "couldn't survive without moving water"...idk ?!?

Hey FF. I live in north central California and we have several lakes that have landlocked Chinooks in them. You can google it and they will show up.

Thanks for the shout back. In MT
we have Chinook salmon in Fort Peck Res. which is about 8 hours from my home, and I understand that Idaho has a fishable population in Coeur D’Alene Lake.
From what little I know about them, the guys that are successful use downriggers to fish them...
Not sure how the population is sustaining, but the seasons and limits are in the regs for those states.

I am also looking for downrigger equipment to fish the Lake Trout in Yellowstone Lake when the ice comes off.

As soon as the ice is off you prolly won't need a downrigger then. Just later on when the water starts to warm up.

Hello Saw1.
If we could get to the lake at ice out we could topline for them, but the park usually doesn’t open the roads until later due to deep snow and limited budgets.
At least that is what I hear...

Yeah, if roads are closed there's not much you can do about it. In that case, guess you need a down rigger.

Cour d Alene lake in northern Idaho has land locked chinook salmon and some go over the dam into the Spokane River and go downstream into Lake Roosevelt. I’ve caught them and they have derbys on Coeur d Alene Lake. Some have grown upward to 25 lbs and more. JV

Sammygee sell me the worn out downriggers and i will try to repair them. I usually cast while fishing but, in in my 70's now and need to ease up on the exertion. I'm a hobbyist and can repair most anything. DEEJAY
