Just a question about keeping trout

There is a lake in Richmond va that is stocked with trout and I was wondering about when I should clean them. Should I gut them and toss the guts back in the water or do I just wait until I get home(25 minute drive).

I would clean on the spot and keep cool on ice. Never know might get a flat tire or something on the way home.

Throw them on ice, clean them at home. You don't need that mess to ruin your lunch or to cut yourself with a filet knife in the field. Also, don't be the guy that leaves heads/guts/carcass on the shore.
Also fish fear pheromones and all... lol

Dorey Park? Yeah clean em at home. Don’t want to turn off the non fishermen that use the park by leaving guts laying around. Besides, they won’t go bad on the way home.

I would bleed them, if you got a good arm or there's ducks or turtles around gutting should be fine.

Second that. I always cut the gills on keepers and put them in the livewell.

Some states don’t allow fish to be cleaned along the shore even gutted better check the regulation first fines can be quite expensive. Even more so when dealing with trout.

Alaska you walk on carcasses to get off the tram. the carcasses are full of the nutrients they have taken from the river. Here in Oregon it WAS illegal to leave them in the rivers. They realized the rivers were losing the nutrition needed from them. They reversed it. Don't leave them up on sand where someone's dog will eat them. I throw them in the deep so the catfish or crawfish get to eat them. In Nature the fish spawn and die usually. Then they dissolve into the stream or lake. If we constantly just extract everything sooner or later there isn't anything left for nature. Fish guts and any leftover from cleaning is also VERY GOOD garden or flower fertilizer. Indians buried fish then planted corn right on top of it the next season. Same reason full of nutrients.
