Advice for spinning reel

Hey guys, I'm having some serious issues with my new spinning reel.

I can't get a single cast further than 12 or 13 feet. I got desperate and clipped on seven ounces of weights and just CHUCKED it, maybe 15 feet.

Seven foot med-heavy fast action rod, went pretty close to parabolic.

Brand new reel, drag set to the absolute lowest, bail didn't snap closed early, nothing...

It's my first time using braided line, do you guys think that's the problem? Any advice?

Only thing I could think of is maybe your line is tangled somewhere in the guides.

Or it’s crappy line with a ton of memory that is giving you problems by dragging when it leaves the reel/guides. This is not unheard of if you bought a combo rod/reel that came with line on it. I’d also check to make sure the bail is opening far enough when you flip it up. You could have to adjust that.

Drag setting has zero influence on how far you can cast with a spinning reel. If the bail opens all the way, the spool is properly filled, the line goes through all the guide rings add the line does not loop around any of the guides or around the rod - then there's no reason why you shouldn't get a good distance

My guess is he doesn't know how to cast.

7oz of lead should just take off. Even with an ultralight noodle trout rod, you can toss a heavy lead 50'+ otg style without breaking the rod.

Drag and casting are really only an issue with heavy lead and slipping during the cast, slicing your finger. He might just have it super loose, to the point where all of the loading energy is getting absorbed by the drag paying out, and the sinker goes nowhere.

Maybe you've got too heavy line for your reel. What lb test are you using and what are the rod and reel rated for?

I’ve had brand new braid twist like hell when first spooled. Let some out manually and reel back in. Let out a little bit more and repeat. Might be the problem?

Respool it with tension on the line.

You either have some very twisted line or the line is wrapped around the bail or rod eyes. possibly to small of guides on the rod but that just don't seem right. check the first two and please when you figure it out get back to us. This is a new one on me with a spinning reel.

Yep, sounds like wind twist. Let out some line, like 20 feet, let it hang limp, if it twists into a loop or knot, that's your problem. Need to rewind making sure line goes into real in same direction as it comes off the spool.

You should change your line, dont use cheap line .Or your bail is not working as it should. Bad cast most likely bad line .

I agree with FS Digest, most likely the line is going around the rod blank then thru a guide. My guess is some where towards the tip. Pull all the line out and rethread thru the guides.

After your short cast, if you try and pull the line off the reel by hand does it stick? If so your line was spooled on to loose. The braid is catching on the rest of the line in the reel. Needs to be totally re-spooled.

It really sounds like the line is not threaded thru ALL of the "eyelet" holes and is going thru the eyelet supports and it restricting the line.
Just thinking outloud ...

I believe it's in your cast. You're not letting the energy to work for you.
