Fish finder problems

Today I took my Garmin striker 4 out on the kayak today for the first time. It was working great at first but after about an hour it wouldn’t stay on. I have it hooked up to a 12v 7Amp hour battery. When it stopped working it would turn back on for a minute or too but not long. I’m assuming it is a battery problem... is there anything else it could be.

Connection problem. I had a similar problem and it was the connection to the fuze strip under the console. The wire was loose in the spade connection. Something to check anyway.

When you say under the console do you mean where the power wire goes into the unit?

No, in my Lowe, it was where the power wire connected to the strip. Since you're in a yak, how does your power wires connect to the battery? Connectors or clips?

I bought a connector kit that I put one end on the power cord for the finder and it has a matching connector that connects to the battery and I just have to plug them together

I would double check all the connections and make sure they're solid and there's no loose wires. Maybe get some dielectric grease to put on those connectors to make sure they're getting a good connection. Any break or dip in the voltage will make the unit shut off. That might not be the issue, but it's a good place to start looking.

I agree on checking connections first. You should also use an electrical tester to check the battery charge before attaching to your fish finder, and then again if the finder shuts down. I have already had sealed 12 volt batteries fail under a load.

Check cutoff. The cutoff may be defective.

Sounds like the ground wire loose or corroded connection that bumps in and out every wave?

Double check your power and your transducer cable. They have been known to come loosened. And sometimes you have to give them a little extra push to make sure they are seated well. And you should check that the transducer is level.

The 1st I would check the ground that is usuly 75% of the trouble. Also the unit allways funtions best when it is run directly to the battery, not a junction that a lot of things running off of it.Hope that helps

I’m willing to bet this is a battery connection/voltage issue rather than the fish finder. Most lithium batteries have a
“Smart board circuit” built in, make sure the
Battery is fully charged with a lithium approved charger. Otherwise it will cycle like that.

Last year I had trouble with my Garmin Echo Map SV. Everything except the side view feature was working. I checked battery connections, transducer, fuses and found the solution to be one of the three wire connections to the unit was loose. Try disconnecting the wires and putting them back together more carefully. Good luck.

I use a Garmin striker 4 also on my kayak. I use clip on wiring, but I also use Marine grade shrink wrap on all my connections. Marine grade shrink wrap has glue inside it and will spread at both ends to seal the ends.
