Making Do with what I have

I have a couple of of old spincast reels that I was considering loading with 6# mono and use them
as ultralights . When trying to see what rods I had to match up, it looked like they.
come with a baitcasting rods. I wonder if a spinning rod would work. I also have a never used Shimano IX400R rear drag spinning reel that I am going to load with 20# braided line with a 6# Fleuro leader to use as an ultralight spinning setup. I think the rod is a 5’6” ultralight. I am thinking of having a few ready for attacking smallmouths later in the year. Your comments are welcome. Thank you.

I know that spincast reels are mounted on casting rods. Will a spinning rod work? Sure it will. How well? I'm not sure. The big difference in casting rods and spinning rods is that the eyes and the reel seat are on different sides. Rod blanks have a natural "bend" to them and the eyes are arranged in accordance with that bend. Spinning rods, the eyes are beneath it, casting rods are above it. On a moderately fast or slow rod it probably wouldn't make much difference. Might make a lot on a fast action rod. Someone who knows more about that than I will chime in here before long.

On a manufactured rod you have no idea where the spine of the rod is, so ya, use the spin-cast reels on the spinning rod, no problem. I like rear drag reels better than front drag reels. I do not like spin-cast reels though.

Thanks guys. I don’t care for spincast reels either, I am just trying to brush the dust off of some things and make use of them. I have a 7’ long ultralight rod and an old Garcia 5’ ultralight combo (I bought for $3 at a garage sale) and a new 5’6” ultralight rod from WM to which I’ll add the Shimano that I just loaded with Braided and fleuro as a leader. I wanted the short rod setups for tight streams and rivers when I am looking for smallmouth and the long 7’ rod for fun at Lake Tenkiller in the wide open cold waters. Other posts have made me think about Ugly Stiks if BP March sale leaves me cold. I still like the one Facon rod I have as a MH.

Love those rear drags. Have 2 baitcasters, 2 spincast, 1 Alvey, 1fly, and 5 or 5 spinning. Never Go out without a rear drags Shimano.

TY. I have two IX 4000R. I don’t see any need in going to a 1000 or 2000.
