Good morning I’m new at this forum I’m from the imperial county area and we have canals that are form from the Colorado River waters, but lately I been having difficulty catching any fish I know the bass metabolism is really low right now because of our weather and I target cat fish but still nothing, maybe I’m doing something wrong I carry 10lb line a drop shot the canal current are a little strong but I use 1/2oz weight, can I get any advice on rigs or line that I could use , also the water level are pretty low so i figured maybe that’s the reason fish aren’t bitting also cause of water temp

Welcome Quin it may help you to identify your area a little better, not sure where imperial county is located.

If you would please go to the user profile and add your location there. That way your next post you will not have to mention the location

If you are fishing the irrigation canals in out of the LA area most are just for transporting water to So Cal and do not have any fish to speak of.

I know exactly where you're talking about and I've fished those canals, but never this time of year, only in the summer. I caught a few bass out of there but I don't know why they wouldn't hold catfish too. If you can find crawfish or a crawfish imitation I would think that would work real well. As I recall that's what I was using. It's been awhile.

Used to train out around Niland and the Chocalate Moutains with the SEALs. Fun times.

Thanks Quin for up dating your user. I see you are right off of route 8 out of Phoenix.

I don't show any one on the spread sheet from that area, but with the size of your state I am sure there are some on here that will be on to help you out.

Checkout sdfish.com, a few people go to the canals to fish. Information is there on what they catch and techniques.
If you need help with the site I'll try to help.

Got to be a sporting goods store there in El Centro. Go in there and get them ol boys to talking. They'll help you out if they want to make a sale. I'm wondering if you're catching bullheads instead of channel cats? If the fish are edible out of those canals, bullheads are might tasty.

Here's some info from werfless on the sdfish.com site.
He's very knowledgeable on fishing.
He takes people out to IV and helps them.
Even meets with them at surf fishing spots to teach them.
No doubt if you contact him he could meet with you out there and show you his techniques. Very nice and helpful guy.
